To ensure and maintain basic
living standards for students living off-campus, that
contract housing complies with the Hawaii Residential
Landlord-Tenant Code, that the integrity of the University,
student and landlord is upheld by reinforcing the Honor
Code, thereby reassuring all of wholesome and righteous
living conditions.
How to Qualify
University
policy requires all BYUH International Work Experience
Scholarship students to reside in campus housing. All
freshmen full-time students must reside in the campus
residence halls until they have completed two semesters
as full-time students unless they are living with immediate
family (mother, father, or legal guardian). Students transferring
to the University must transfer a minimum of 30 credits
to live off-campus. Students living off-campus must live
in BYUH contract off-campus housing facilities. An exception
is granted to those students over 25, students who live
at home, and married students. Laie is a small residential
community. There are no large rental apartments or condominiums.
Most off-campus housing consists of 4-5 students sharing
the rent in a home, or 2-3 students renting rooms in the
homes of members of the community. Affordable off-campus
living units for students are very limited and the Housing
Office provides a list of contract off-campus landlords
(see links below). All students living off-campus must
provide the
University
with their current Hawaii street
address while enrolled at BYUH. Single students under
age 25 that live in non-contract housing will not be permitted
to enroll at BYUH.
Students
giving a false address are in violation of the Honor code
and are subject to suspension. While the University Honor
code also applies to all students living off-campus, landlords
are also expected to abide by the Hawaii Residential Landlord-Tenant
Code, which provides understanding and compliance of various
housing laws in Hawaii. Landlords are to comply with the
City & County of Honolulu's Ordinance #21, which states
that there should be no more than five (5) unrelated students
living in one dwelling. All landlords who contract with
BYUH must use the latest Student Landlord Rental Agreement
provided by the University in signing and coming to terms
with students. All contract housing facilities are inspected
yearly by a member of the Housing office at which time
the contract is either renewed or terminated. In case
of disputes and disagreements the Housing office will
provide mediation if the landlord and students are unable
to resolve their difference.
What is the difference between contract and non-contract?
BYU-Hawaii Students Required to Live in BYUH Off-Campus Contract Housing
Unless specifically excused by the Housing Office, all single BYU-Hawaii students, who do not reside in on-campus housing, are required to live in BYUH Off-Campus Contracted Housing and to provide the address of their local residence (not a P.O. Box) as part of the registration process.
This requirement may be waived by the BYU-Hawaii Housing Office for the following students:
a) Single parents with children
b) Single students living with parents
c) Single students who are 25 years of age or older
d) Under certain conditions, as determined by the Housing Office, the requirement may be waived for other students.
BYU-H single students residing in non-contract housing who are not excused by the BYU-H Housing Office are subject to the following sanctions:
1) Future registration may be stopped, current registration may be discontinued, and activity card privileges may be withheld until the student verifies that he/she is living in or will be living in University contract housing.
2) Students falsifying their addresses will be subject to the above consequences as well as disciplinary action by the University for Honor Code violations.
