Kazuo Ishii opened the first Central Pacific Bank branch in
downtown Honolulu in 1954. The bank, established by World War II veterans to
help struggling community groups, had capital of $350,000. When Ishii retired
as president 24 years later, the bank had nearly $16 million in capital and
$353 million in assets. Ishii, 89, of Honolulu died Tuesday Feb 3, 1998 in

Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, which recognizes excellence in community
