Walter “Dutchy” Olsen - Family and friends have
never heard anything negative about Walter “Dutchy” Olsen—known to
acquaintances as “The Flying Dutchman”—and the opposite also was true. “Over
the time I’ve known him, almost 45 years, I’ve never heard him say a bad word
about anyone else,” said son-in-law Larry Johnson, Bank of Hawaii chief
executive officer. “He’s probably the epitome of what you see is what you get.”
Olsen, considered by many as “Mr. Baseball” from the mid-1930s to the late
‘40s, died suddenly at his Nuuanu Valley home Monday Jul 27, 1998. He was 84.
Olsen made his name in baseball, from his late teens until his thirties. He
played during World War II against the 7th Air Force All Stars,
which included major leaguers Joe DiMaggio, Pee Wee Reese and Ferris Fain. He played for three different teams—the
Braves, Hawaiians and Wanderers in the Hawaii Baseball League—and ended up being
general manager of the league for several years. He earned the nickname “The
Flying Dutchman” while, as a Brave, he slid into a second baseman in an attempt
to break up a double play. “He knew he was going to be thrown out, but he went
head first into the second baseman and
broke his wrist,” Johnson said. “It didn’t bother him. It showed how
competitive he was.” Olsen served as director of the old Honolulu Stadium and
ran the concessions for many years. For 40 years, he was owner and operator of
Mothers Food Products. He retired 15 years ago but remained active, golfing at
the Oahu Country Club where he was a member. Olsen shot his age three different
times, including a 73 at age 73. He also was a member of the Outrigger Canoe
Club and past president of the Honolulu Quarterback Club. “Dutchy was
happy-go-lucky, always cheerful and very gung-ho,” said Earl Galdeira, also a
past president who credits Olsen with getting him to join the Quarterback Club.
“I can still hear us guys laughing and stomping on the ground. He was just a
great guy to be around with.” “If I brought you and he met you for the first
time, he’d put his arm on your shoulder and say ‘Where have you been all my
life?’”. Olsen grew up in Kalihi, the oldest of four children. His father was a
blacksmith but died when Olsen was 15. As the oldest, he took responsibility
for keeping the family together. He shined shoes, dove for coins off Pier 11
and hawked newspapers. He met his wife,
the former Mary Felix, at the old Princess Theater downtown and married her in
1937. They had been married 60 years. As a young boy, he would go to the old
Central YMCA at Alakea and King Street, rent a locker and towel for 15 cents
and spend the day there. One day a man offered him free membership for a year.
Although he never learned the man’s identity, Olsen never forgot the man’s
gesture and became a supporter of the YMCA—particularly for underprivileged
kids who couldn’t afford a membership, Johnson said. The family requests no
flowers. Instead, donations can be sent to
the Walter “Dutchy” Olsen Memorial Fund at the Nuuanu YMCA. Besides his
wife, Olsen is survived by daughters Claire Johnson, Charlene Eveleth and
Amelia Andrade; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services: 9:30

sisters Eleanor Santiago, Mary Supebedia and Sandra Caravalho; 16

Alfred “Otto” Ortogero Jr., 59, of Honolulu, a retired
city wastewater mechanic, died June 29, 1998 in Hilo Hospital. Born in Hilo, he
is survived by daughters Zona Mae Ortogero-Gonsalves and Toni M.
Ortogero-Serikaku; mother Ann; brothers Wilfred, Robert, Donald, Wayne and
