Keith Ahue, deputy director of the Hawaii Government Employees Association and  close Cabinet-level adviser to former Gov. John Waihee, died Thursday May 13, 1999 in St. Francis   Hospice. He was 48. "It is a tragic loss for this union's 40,188 men and women," said Russell Okata, HGEA   executive director.  "Keith was an insightful and inspiring leader. His calm demeanor and his wonderful  sense of humor brought out the best in people. People looked to him for thoughtful  guidance, and he never failed to deliver."  Okata said he counted Ahue as one of his most trusted advisers and a friend.  Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono, acting governor while Gov. Ben Cayetano is out of state, said:  "Keith Ahue was a dedicated public servant.  "He worked for the people of Hawaii as the capable head of the Department of Land  and Natural Resources under Gov. John Waihee. He also served as director of the  Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. He was a vocal and effective advocate  for the members of the Hawaii Government Employees Association where he last  served as deputy director.  "He will be missed. I join the people of Hawaii in offering his family our heartfelt  condolences."   Born in Honolulu, his postgraduate education included the trade-union program at   Harvard in 1989.  In his 1974-1990 HGEA career, he rose from union agent to supervising agent, field  services officer, special programs officer and deputy director.   His state government service found him as 1990-91 deputy director of the Department  of Land and Natural Resources; 1991-93 director, Department of Labor and Industrial   Relations; and 1993-1995 chairman of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.  From 1995 to the present, he was once again HGEA deputy director. His life included  a number of other community and professional activities. He is survived by wife Linda, father Wilford, and brothers Cliff and Kent.  Services will be at 11 a.m. May 28 at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary. Thelma “Keko” Kalama Aiu, who won a gold medal in swimming in the 400-meter   relay in the 1948 Olympics in London, died Monday May 17, 1999 in Queen's Hospital.   She was 68.  Attorney Allen Stack, who also won a gold medal swimming backstroke in the 1948  Olympics, described Aiu as “being well-well- thought-of.”   Aiu also served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps.   She is survived by daughters Lani, Abigail, Hildegarde Barona and Mathilda Oliveira;  sons John; James, Crispin and Travis; brother Egon Kalama; sisters Helen Silva and  Hazel Bishaw; 19 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.  Visitors may call from 5 to 8 p.m. at Borthwick Mortuary on Sunday.   Funeral services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Her ashes will be scattered at Sans Souci  Beach at 5 p.m. on Monday.

Ernest K. Akamine, a  University of Hawaii emeritus professor of plant physiology died Jan. 5, 1999 at age 86.  Akamine is credited with contributing much to the study of plant  physiology, publishing both popular and scientific articles on seed  germination, sugar cane growth, herbicides and other subjects. He is  considered a pioneer in the field, and his works are standard  references.  Akamine received a 1995 UH Board of Regents' Medal of Distinction  and the 1994 Outstanding Alumnus Award of the UH College of  Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.  Hilo-born Akamine earned bachelor's and master's degrees at the  University of Hawaii, and later did postgraduate work at the University  of California at Los Angeles.  His affiliations included the Hawaiian Academy of Science, American  Society of Plant Physiologists and the American Society for  Horticultural Sciences.  Active in church work, he served as president of Men of Wesley  Church and first vice president of the Methodist Board of Lay  Activities.  Akamine married Toki Nakasone at Lahaina, Maui, June 11, 1938. She   preceded him in death in 1995. She was a retired teacher.  He is survived by daughters Carol Matsushita and Faye McCoy, son  Harry, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  The rites Saturday will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist  Church, 150 Hunakai St. Arrangements are by Ultimate Cremation  Services of Hawaii.

Virginia M. Alejo, 78, of Waipahu, who worked in fabrics and crafts at Wal-Mart Royal Kunia, died Sunday Jan 31, 1999 in Kuakini Hospital. She was born in the  Philippines. She is survived by husband Paul M.; son Anthony P.; daughter  Phyllis A. Tofilau Eti Alesana, former prime minister of Samoa, died yesterday Mar 19, 1999 at his home in Apia. He  was 74.  His nephew, American Samoa Gov. Tauese Sunia, confirmed the death. Tofilau died at about  10:45 a.m. at Nafanua, the official residence of the prime minister.  Tofilau, who served 15 years as prime minister of the former Western Samoa, resigned in  November after undergoing cancer treatment in New Zealand. He was succeeded by Tuilaepa  Sallele Malielegaoi.

 

Edgar W.K. "Alec" Alexander, 74, of Kaneohe, a retired administration technician, died Thursday Jul 29, 1999 in Kailua. He was a World War II veteran. He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by wife Mary; children Diane N. Weeks and Edgar W., Steve K., Randolph K. and Donna W. MAURICE S. ALEXANDER, 83, of Aiea, died Nov. 12,  1999. Born in Chicago. Retired Army lieutenant colonel.  Survived by wife, Reiko; son, the Rev.
