Dr. Claude Vernon Caver, 77, of Honolulu, well-known dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, died Wednesday Apr 14, 1999 in Tripler Hospital. Born in Comanche, Texas, he eventually became physician in charge of the Hansen's Disease Facility at Kalaupapa, Molokai, during years 1950-52. He later went into private practice in Honolulu and became a consultant on Hansen's disease to the state Department of Health. He was on the staff at Queen's, St. Francis, Wahiawa, Kahuku, Castle, Children's and Kuakini hospitals. His education included bachelor's and medical degrees from the University of Texas, and his early medical career included an internship at Queen's Hospital. He performed both active and reserve Navy service and later served with reserve components of the Air Force. Graduating from the Command and Staff College and School of Aerospace Medicine, he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Earlier, he was on the staff of Southwestern Medical Foundation at Dallas and later entered the University of Pennsylvania graduate school of medicine before returning to Hawaii to serve at Kalaupapa. His affiliations included Hawaii and Honolulu County medical societies, Hawaii Dermatology Society, Pacific Dermatology Association, American Academy of Dermatology, Hawaiian Academy of Science and International Society of Tropical Dermatology.
