Lawrence "Larry" Toshiaki
Ichinose, a longtime boxing manager and son of prominent boxing promoter
"Sad Sam" Ichinose, died Tuesday Dec 17, 2002. He was 68. Ichinose gained
fame by managing world champions Andy Ganigan and Ben Villaflor during his
17-year career from 1967 to 1984. He also managed headline fighters Leo
"The Snake" Calderon, Johnny Santos, Young Kennedy and Ralph Aviles. Ichinose became
a boxing manager at the request of his father, who under Hawai'i boxing rules
could not perform both duties. "Larry would manage fighters that Sam was particularly
interested in," said Mike Machado, executive secretary of the Hawai'i
State Boxing Commission. "Larry was semiestablished because of his
father." As a manager,
Larry Ichinose handled the financial interests of the boxers, who would earn
two-thirds of the profits, while he received one-third, Machado said. Under the
guidance of Ichinose and trainers, Villaflor, a young fighter from the
Philippines, became a world champion, Machado said. "He did a good job
with Ben. A lot of credit has to go to Larry Ichinose." Bobby Lee,
former executive secretary of the Hawai'i State Boxing Commission from 1951 to
1977, said Larry Ichinose was a "protege of his dad." "I say that
only because Sam was such an outstanding and outspoken leader, if you're his
son, you can't shine," said Lee, who was recently inducted into the
Hawai'i Hall of Fame. Ichinose is survived by a son, Samson; daughters, Cecilia Ichinose
and Laurie Campos; a grandchild; brother, Miles Ichinose; and sister, Amy
Okamura. A service will

Minoru "Gabby" Inaba, former Kona educator and
legislator, died Thursday Jun 6, 2002 at his home in Kealakekua, Hawaii. He was
98. Inaba's 38 years as a teacher, coach, and vice principal at Konawaena High
School from the 1920s made him a a respected figure. "He had the respect
of two generations. He taught fathers and children," said Kona rancher and
former County Councilman Sherwood Greenwell. Over the years, Democrat Inaba
helped Republican Greenwell with his campaign, and Greenwell returned the
favor. On Inaba's retirement from the school system, then-Gov. John Burns took
note of his availability. "Gov. Burns wanted him to run," Greenwell
said. Inaba served in the Legislature as a representative from Kona for 10
years in the 1960s and 1970s. What Inaba had done as an educator to build
individuals, he did for Kona's physical facilities as a legislator. Inaba obtained
money for a new Kona Hospital, to expand Honokohau Harbor, to drill a new water
well, making a community water system possible. "I can remember the days
(before the well) when we all had water tanks in Kona," said Marnie Herkes
of the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. Inaba brought money to his district
"unfailingly," Greenwell said. The son of Jentaro and Hatsuyo Inaba,
Minoru Inaba was born into a family of seven brothers and two sisters who
succeeded in several professions. But his childhood could be hard, a fact he
relates in his own voice in an oral history description of his work as a
seventh-grader harvesting coffee. It can be heard at: http://www
2.soc.hawaii.edu/css/oral_hist/konaau.html Coffee also shaped Inaba's sports
activities. He coached several sports, but not football, because Kona schools
were on a "coffee schedule," holding classes in the summer but not in
the fall harvesting season when other schools were fielding football teams. His
youthful coffee experiences served the community eight decades later as Inaba
helped the Kona Historical Society preserve the Uchida Coffee Farm as a museum
a decade ago. "He was a great guy," said Greenwell. Inaba is survived
by his wife Sumie Jane; daughters Jeanette Tinnel, Mae Kawahara, and Annette
Sato; brothers Yoshio, Norman, Goro and James; five grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Daifukuji Soto

Yoshimasa Ishihara - Yoshimasa Ishihara's life is best described
by the Japanese word, "kaizen," which means lifelong learner. Kirk Nakamoto
used the word in eulogizing Ishihara, his grandfather, who died Sept. 14, 2002
at age 86. Ishihara, owner of Hallmark Jewelers at Ala Moana Center, was
believed to be the oldest working jeweler in Honolulu when he retired two years
ago. "Dad took
(kaizen) to heart," third-generation jeweler Isaac Ishihara said. "He
was always trying to learn new things. He read trade magazines and he attended
jewelry industry classes until his retirement. We have all the latest
equipment. "I think he
was an example of integrity and professionalism and was a leader in the
industry," said his son, who is running the family business after working
off and on with his father for 30 years. Yoshimasa Ishihara gave up an opportunity to attend medical
school after he graduated from the University of Hawai'i-Manoa to help his
father, Gihei, a noted watchmaker on Kaua'i who opened a jewelry store on
'A'ala Street in Chinatown in 1927. When Gihei brought his son into the business, G. Ishihara
& Son had moved to Hotel Street near River Street. Yoshimasa Ishihara was
running the business in 1952, when he moved the store to Hotel and Bishop
streets and changed the name to Hallmark Jewelers. In 1966,
Hallmark opened a second store at Ala Moana Center, becoming the first tenant
on the diamondhead side of the shopping center. He is survived by his wife of 59 years,
Rosaline; sons John, Robert and Isaac; daughters Joan Nakamoto and Susan
Ishihara; brothers Yasuo Ishihara; sisters Janet Lee, Sylvia Ifuku and Lillian
Sakasegawa; and four grandchildren. A private service was held Friday. The family requests
donations in his name can be sent to the American Gem Society, c/o Peggy
Campbell, 8881 W. Sahara Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89117. [Adv 25/9/2002]
