At long last a guide to planning and implementing integrated lesson plans has been created!

This pathfinder was designed to take math and integrate it with other subjects. Inside this pamphlet you will find lessons and activities that join math with children's story books, geography, language arts, science, art, and cooperative learning.

Integrating subject matter is a holistic approach to education. All the subjects listed above are integrally woven in children's everyday life outside the classroom. So why teach these subjects in isolation? The integration of subject matter enriches learning and makes it more meaningful to students because it teaches fewer things in greater depth which leads to greater student understanding.

Math & Art!

Math Arts! By MaryAnn F. Kohl & Cindy Gainer
Grades
K-1
This book will help young students increase their awareness of math concepts through art in the everyday world around them. Students will learn about matching, sorting, patterns, sequence, spatial relationships, and number values. Students will cut, paste, and glue their way into a better basic understanding of the mathematical world.

Tangram Patterns By Thomas E. Foster
This book is worth checking out. Tangrams are ancient Chinese puzzles that were used to form the shape of a character or element in a story. Mathematically, they teach about problem solving, size, shape, congruence, symmetry, area, property of polygons, etc. The purpose of this book is to provide a collection of tangram patterns that can be reproduced for the classroom. It will be easy to see how tangrams will lend themselves to the arts.

Children's Books

Grandfather Tang’s Story By Ann Tompert
This is a lovely tale told using tangrams, the ancient Chinese puzzles. Tangrams are geometric shapes that can be used to teach many mathematical concepts. In this book Little Soo is being told a story by her grandfather about fox fairies. Her grandfather arranges the tangram puzzle pieces to look like the characters in the story. Your students will love to see what kinds of things they can make with tangrams when the story is finished!

And why can’t you keep 10 cookies without someone taking away three?” Find out the answers to these and more as you journey along with the little girl in Math Curse. Just be careful, the curse may be contagious!
