Deselection of Books

May 21, 2008

Dear Faculty Members, Special Instructors, and Education Missionaries. We thank you for your continued interest in and support of the ongoing process and appreciate your making time to come into the library to review materials being considered for withdrawal. This difficult task could not be accomplished without your assistance.

Click here to see the attached list for specific titles.

Titles have been selected in light of the following criteria:

  1. Superseded editions
  2. Worn, mutilated or badly marked items in poor condition
  3. Duplicate copies of seldom used titles
  4. Surplus copies of titles that are no longer in demand for supplementary use, or items that are represented in multiple titles when a better title is available
  5. Materials which are part of an incomplete set
  6. Materials containing subject matter inappropriate to the collection (i.e. programs no longer being offered)
  7. Materials which contain outdated, obsolete or misleading information
  8. Items with little or no use as determined by historical usage statistics that indicate a title has little application to student or faculty research needs

Please make your considered determinations in light of the materials that remain in the library collections. While no one likes to see books withdrawn, there are still shelves and shelves of similar materials available upstairs in the library which are also good, well-used, and in some cases, more current.

A list of titles is provided in a separate document for your review. The materials themselves are available for you to examine through Friday, May 30, 2008 in the Technical Services Department of the Library, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Following your review, any titles recommended for retention will be returned to the shelves. Subject area includes Economic histories and Industries/Labor.

Please note: To avoid possible conflict of interest issues, materials selected for de-acquisition may not be given to individuals.

Please communicate concerns regarding any of these titles to Doug Bates, x3850 or to Riley Moffat, x3884.

We thank you for your cooperation and appreciate your expertise in making our collection stronger through this de-selection process.
