Bing Fai Lau, who for more than half a century served Iolani School in almost every capacity including accountant, business manager, coach and athletic director -- died Wednesday Aug 4, 1999. He was 93. Headmaster Val Iwashita described Lau as "a remarkable man" and active into his 90s. "He was very supportive of Iolani School and very supportive of what we try to do in the community," Iwashita said. "He also regularly attended events at Iolani. He was a very special spirit and he touched everyone around him, especially all of us at Iolani." William Lee, Iolani dean of students since 1963, noted that "Iolani had been his life.""He has done so much for Iolani," said Lee, who graduated with one of Lau's sons in 1953. "As business manager and school accountant, he was the keeper of the purse so that Iolani School could operate in those rough early years. He also was an avid golfer and one of the founding fathers of the Narcissus Festival." Lau, who retired in 1971, served under eight headmasters and watched the school progress through various stages and campuses. His affiliation with Iolani began when the school was on the grounds of St. Andrew's Cathedral. He moved with the school when it opened a Nuuanu campus, and then went to its current Ala Wai site. In a school history published a few years ago, Lau recalled that after spending 52 years atIolani he considered the school his "life. "Not everything was hunky-dory, but the world isn't either," Lau wrote. "Iolani School in those days didn't pay very much, but I was comfortable. We had free meals in Nuuanu. I still had money in my pocket." Lau arrived from Canton in 1919 at the age of 13. As a student, he worked at Oahu's pineapple canneries to pay for his tuition When Iolani moved to Nuuanu, he found himself sleeping in a tent while a dormitory was built. At Iolani, Lau learned English and rose to become valedictorian of the class of 1928, the first to graduate from the Nuuanu campus. He also was president of many community associations, including the United Chinese Society, and was honored in 1987 by the United Chinese Society as the model father of the year. Joseph Lee served in  two World Wars  The death of Joseph K. Lee, 102, apparently leaves nine surviving World War  I veterans in the state.  Lee leaves Russell W. Voorhees, 102, with American Legion Kau Tom Unit  No. 11, which also was Lee's affiliate, and William Frank Steer, 98, and  Leoncio Balan, 100, both with the American Legion Wahiawa post, among the   last vets.  Gabriel Perez, associate director of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Honolulu, said they are the three surviving veterans on Oahu. There are as  many as six more on the other islands, he said.  Lee, a veteran of World Wars I and II, died Wednesday in the Veterans  Affairs Center for Aging at Tripler Hospital.  “He was a pretty active guy for 102,” said Solomon M.L. Kam, second vice  commander, Kau Tom Unit.   Bernard Lee, adjutant, American Legion Department of Hawaii, thinks the  number of World War I surviving veterans had dwindled to about five  statewide by 1994, when Lee and two other World War I vets, all Kau Tom  members, were honored by that unit.  Lee, a world traveler, joined the Army in 1918 when he was 21. Immediately after the Pearl Harbor attack, Lee -- a National Guardsman -- went back on   active duty as a mess sergeant. He was a member of the Hawaii National Guard for 20 years, then also served on Guadalcanal. After the wars, he worked more than 30 years as an accountant with Chun Chong Fruit and Vegetable Co. Lee belonged to the Ket On Society, Chee Kung Tong Society, Golden Age  Club and the Ala Wai Bridge Club. An avid player, he taught bridge until he  turned 90.
