Rex T. Barber, a World War II fighter pilot who spent most
of his life seeking sole credit for shooting down the bomber carrying the
mastermind of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, has died at 84. Barber, who had been a mint and hay farmer
in recent years, died Thursday. Barber
was one of 16 pilots in specially equipped long-range P-38 Lightnings who were
dispatched 400 miles on April 18, 1943, to intercept Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto,
commander in chief of the Japanese Imperial Navy, over the Solomon Islands in
the Pacific. American forces had broken a Japanese code to learn his flight
plans. Though the American Fighter Aces
Association gave sole credit to Barber, the official U.S. Air Force record said
that Barber shot off the tail of the Betty bomber carrying Yamamoto and set it
on fire. According to the Air Force record, pilot Tom Lanphier blasted the
plane before it plunged into the jungles of Bougainville Island. Urged by Barber and his supporters,
authorities reviewed the record several times, with no change in the official
account. A federal appeals court in 1996 ruled against Barber's challenge of
the record. [Adv 28/7/2001]

DR. JOHN E. BARDACH, 85, of Honolulu, died Jan. 24, 2001Dr. John E. Bardach, 85, internationally renowned marine scientist, father of aquaculture in Hawaii and a leader in global aquaculture development, died Wednesday. "He was a giant in the industry and he wrote the textbook that is considered the bible of aquaculturists throughout the world," said C. Richard Fassler, state economic development specialist. The Austrian-born scientist was a University of Michigan professor for 17 years before joining the University of Hawaii as Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology director in 1971. He served in that post until 1977. He became an East-West Center research associate in 1978, working in the Resource Systems Institute, serving as acting institute director, senior adviser to the center president and consultant on marine affairs. In 1990-1992 he was interim director of the center's Environment and Policy Institute. In 1993, he was named as the center's first Emeritus Senior Fellow in recognition of his international reputation and activities in his field. "You can't overestimate his contribution to aquaculture," said E. Gordon Grau, Hawaii Sea Grant Program director and former Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology director. John Corbin, aquaculture manager in the state Department of Agriculture who was a student at Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology when Bardach was director, said, "He was an inspiration in terms of aquaculture and the potential, not only for Hawaii but for the world. "But the amazing thing about John, not only was he a world expert in aquaculture, he was a world expert in several other fields that weren't even related -- chemical sensing physiology and resource geography." Bardach's interests ranged from sea to land, including Asian art and symphony music. "He spoke quite a few languages and always had a twinkle in his eye," said Fassler. "He had a wonderful sense of humor." He had appointments in the UH-Manoa geography and oceanography departments and was named the Spark Matsunaga Fellow in Living Marine Resources by the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute. He chaired the Pacific Science Association's task force on global environmental change and represented the U.S. National Academy of Sciences on the Council of the Pacific Science Association. He was a prolific author of articles and books on fisheries and aquaculture, marine resource management, global climate changes and other issues. His books included the text, "Aquaculture: The Farming and Husbandry of Freshwater and Marine Organisms," the award-winning "Harvest of the Sea," and the first book on "Sustainable Aquaculture." He received a lifetime achievement award in 1998 from the Hawaii Aquaculture Association. Bardach is survived by his sister, Helena Ripper, and nephew, Peter Ripper. TERENCE TUI A TANE BARROW - Noted Maori and Polynesian art expert Terence Tui A Tane Barrow, 78, died Aug. 31, 2001 at his Honolulu home, leaving to his son Leonard the job of finishing his 21st book. The New Zealand native had a Cambridge University doctorate in Pacific anthropology and worked 20 years as a curator for the New Zealand National Museum before coming to Honolulu in 1964, said his wife, Hisako. He was the Bishop Museum's Polynesian Collection curator from 1964-68 and an author and representative for Charles E. Tuttle Publishing Co. from 1965-85, Hisako Barrow said. "All along, he did tribal art appraising," she said. "He was very famous -- anyone who wanted to authenticate Polynesian art would call. He got calls from Paris, London, Christie's in New York." She described her husband, who was Caucasian but had a Maori middle name, as "very creative, very knowledgeable. We traveled all over the world together. He has friends all over the world. I had a most unusual life through him." Among Barrow's 20 hardback book titles: "Maori Wood Sculpture," "Maori Art of New Zealand," "Women of Polynesia," "The Art of the South Sea Islands," "The Decorative Arts of New Zealand Maori," "The Art of Tahiti," "Music of the Maori," "Incredible Hawaii" and "More Incredible Hawaii." "His book 'Art and Life in Polynesia' put him on the map," said Barrow's son Leonard, who is studying toward a doctorate in Polynesian anthropology and hopes to finish the book his father was working on the last few years. "As a father, no one could have had such a helpful, kind and compassionate teacher," Leonard Barrow said. "During the four years he was ill, it forced me to hurry and learn his ideas on Polynesian art and culture. "He was open-minded," Leonard Barrow said. "He fought the Japanese in World War II and then married one," referring to his mother, a Japanese native. "We lived in three worlds: Japan, New Zealand and Hawaii," said Hisako Barrow, who will return her husband's ashes to his homeland this fall. Barrow also is survived by a second son, Ken, who lives in Honolulu, and a brother, Dick, and sister, Chic, who live in New Zealand. Yosihiko Sinoto, senior anthropologist at the Bishop Museum, said that he worked with Barrow a short time at the museum and saw him at social events since then. "He is well known about Maori ethnological studies, as a specialist of art and history of Maori culture. After he left the museum, he did a lot of writing and publishing," Sinoto said. "He knows not only Maori, but also Pacific Island anthropology." [SB 10/9/2001]

Col. James W. "The Chief" Bass, physician, soldier and scholar as well as a world-renowned expert in pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases at Tripler Army Medical Center for three decades, died June 12. He was 71. Bass was first assigned to Hawaii as assistant chief of Tripler's department of pediatrics in 1968 and elevated to chief a year later. From 1975 to 1981, Bass was chief of pediatrics at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He also served as consultant in pediatrics to the surgeon general of the U.S. Army, and he was the founding chairman and professor in the department of pediatrics at the Uniformed Services from 1976-81. In 1981 he returned to Honolulu and served as chief of pediatrics at Tripler until 1994. Since 1994 he had been the senior medical consultant in pediatrics at Tripler and was still seeing patients before his death. Bass held professorships at several medical schools throughout the United States. He served on the prestigious Committee on Infectious Diseases with the American Academy of Pediatrics, the editorial board of the Pediatrics Infectious Disease journal and the Executive Committee of the Hawaii Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Bass was the first to demonstrate the usefulness of erythromycin in the treatment of pertussis (whooping cough). He also demonstrated that strep throat could be treated with penicillin twice a day instead of four times a day. He showed that the cat-scratch disease organism was commonly found in kittens in Hawaii, and proved the usefulness of the antibiotic clarithromycin for the treatment of cat-scratch disease. He also developed the protocol used nationwide for the treatment of infants with fever and suspected infection. He was author or co-author of more than 200 abstracts, book chapters, clinical articles and scientific papers. Bass was a highly sought-after lecturer and visiting professor worldwide. Bass was born in Shreveport, La. He graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1957 and was commissioned in the Army the previous year. THOMAS EMIL
BASTIS, 73, of Honolulu He
was best known as a captain of Hawai'i industry, most recently as president of
big concrete company Ameron HC&D. But Thomas Emil Bastis, who died at his
home here Sept. 1 at the age of 73, was a multifaceted man of many gifts, whose
accomplishments included designing a snowmobile for Hawai'i. Born in Minneapolis, Bastis learned about
snow early on, and his knowledge was tapped by the Boatel Co., a manufacturer
of snowmobiles and houseboats for whom Bastis went to work in 1967. He came to Hawai'i in 1972 for the Telecheck
Co. after that firm bought out Boatel. His executive talents and engineering background soon attracted the
attention of Ameron, which hired Bastis to run its Maui operations before
bringing him in 1979 to the headquarters staff in Honolulu where Bastis was
named president in 1982. At the
head of Ameron, Bastis guided the firm out of the doldrums into the boom years
of the late 1980s and into the consolidation of the industry in the early
1990s. He was an early and
thoughtful advocate of mass transit for Hawai'i. His civic contributions
included government commissions and United Way leadership on Maui. Bastis helped design two snowmobiles that set
records for high-altitude operation on the slopes of Mauna Kea. They were
dubbed Okole and Maluna for their habit of spilling riders into the snow.
He served in Japan and Korea in the
U.S. Army from 1946 to 1950, graduated from Ripon College in Wisconsin with a
bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics, and went on to the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology for a degree in business and engineering. Bastis is survived by his wife, Ruth; sons
Jonathan of California, David of Texas and Mark of the West Indies; brother,
Charles, and mother, Evelyn, both of Minnesota; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be at noon tomorrow
at The Church of the Holy Nativity, 528 Kalaniana'ole Highway. Casual attire is

John "Jack" Beardsley Jr., an internationally distinguished expert on insects and pest control, died Feb. 5, 2001 in Honolulu while working at the Bishop Museum on an assessment for the Maui Airport extension. He was 74. A native of Berkeley, Calif., Beardsley began his work in Hawai‘i with the oriental fruit fly program in the 1950s, and went on to become an authority on mealybugs, wasps and other hymenoptera, a class that includes bees, ants and other insects with thin waists and stingers. During his prolific career, he contributed to more than 500 published scientific notes on new immigrant species. He also conducted research on agricultural pests in Australia, England, Zaire, Nigeria, Central Africa, Senegal, Bangladesh and Thailand. "He was the best," said Dick Tsuda, a University of Hawai‘i-Manoa insect identity specialist who worked with Beardsley. "If he didn’t recognize the insect, then it was probably something new to the state." While pursuing his graduate degrees, Beardsley was an entomologist in Micronesia and for the Hawai‘i Sugar Planters Association. Beardsley joined the University of Hawai‘i Entomology Department in 1963 and went on to serve as the department’s chairman in the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources from 1981 to 1991. He was a research fellow at the Bishop Museum, and was working with museum entomologists on two biological survey projects at the time of his death. He also was studying the risk of more insects entering Maui with an increase in direct flights to the island. "He was remarkable," said Lyle Wong, head of the plant industry division of the state Department of Agriculture. "As for the work we’re doing on Maui, it’s going to be more difficult without his help." Wong says that just before his death, Beardsley had "the most fantastic meeting" with his colleagues at the Bishop Museum, and that his wife noted that "he died doing exactly what he loved to do, at a place that he loved." Besides his wife, Peggy, Beardsley is survived by children, Steven, Laurel Breault, John and Claire Leary; sister, Nancy Burke; and brother, Edward. A service will be held Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Atherton Halau at the Bishop Museum. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the John W. Beardsley Fund through the University of Hawai‘i Foundation and the Bishop Museum to further advance the field of entomology.
