Harry Ueno, long considered a hero for taking a
courageous stand against the corruption of guards during the World-War II
internment of Japanese Americans, has died. He was 97. Ueno, who died Tuesday of pneumonia in Mountain View, also supported a campaign to win
reparations for the 120,000 Japanese-Americans forced into the internment
camps. "He fought for
what he believed in," said U.S. Rep. Mike Honda, D-Calif.
"My thoughts and prayers are with his family." Born in Hawai'i in 1907, Ueno took a job on a merchant
ship as a teenager, abandoning the ship when it reached the United States. He settled in Los Angeles, where he married and raised three sons
while selling produce. But that life was interrupted in 1941, when the Japanese
bombed Pearl
Harbor. Ueno and his family were taken to the Manzanar
internment camp, located at the base of Mount Whitney, which eventually housed 10,000 men,
women and children. While working in the
mess hall, Ueno realized that camp operators were selling sugar intended for
his fellow internees on the wartime black market. He confronted them and was
arrested. Two young internees were shot and killed by guards in the uprising that
ensued. For
more than three years, Ueno was carted to various jails around the West,
spending a year in solitary confinement in Tule Lake, though he was never charged with a crime
or given a hearing. After the war, he received $15 and a train ticket to San Jose. He began a new life there, raising
strawberries and cherries and retiring in 1972. His
story has been included in an oral history titled "Manzanar
Martyr"; "Rabbit in the Moon," a documentary film by fellow
internee Emiko Omori; as well as "And Justice for All," a book about
the internment. [Adv Dec. 17, 2004]

Ross Unebasami - Sometimes, even a
father doesn't realize how wonderful his son is until both are put to the
test. Lloyd Unebasami
found out what his son, Ross, was all about as he watched him battle leukemia
for the past four years. He watched as his only son suffered through months of
chemotherapy, a few months of being cancer free, and then a relapse that put
Ross through more torturous chemo and a bone marrow transplant. Through it all,
Ross never lost hope and though he had as much right as anyone, he never
complained. He refused to stay in his hospital bed and walked the hospital's
corridor for exercise, and he welcomed visitors, even though he was often
barely conscious. But the leukemia finally was too much even for Ross' spirit
and will, and he died Friday at The Queen's Medical Center. He was 22. "He went through some very difficult times, there's no
doubt about it," Lloyd Unebasami said. "But
he just took it all. He just said, 'We know we got to do it. Don't tell me
about it, do it.' " "As a dad, I never knew my son would be that
great," he said. Ross Unebasami was a senior at Roosevelt High School when he found out he had acute lymphoma
leukemia, which doctors said was treatable. A self-described "band
geek," Ross was one of the top high school saxophonists in the state. He also was involved in sports and student activities and
served as chairman of the State Student Conference. After he was diagnosed in
January 2000, many fellow student leaders became his biggest supporters. In August 2002,
blood tests showed that Ross was cancer free. He enrolled at the University of Hawai'i and became a member of the UH Jazz
Ensemble. "He basically
started life and was having a fantastic life, going to school and doing all the
things that a 20-year-old wanted to do," Lloyd Unebasami
said. But
in February 2003, the leukemia returned and an even stronger series of
chemotherapy couldn't stop it. Ross had a bone marrow transplant in March, but
he developed complications.
