Fay Hanae Sadamitsu of Lihu‘e, died April 2, 2005, at Kapiolani Medical Center in Honolulu at the age of 53. Born Feb. 3, 1952, in Hawai‘i, she was a preschool director/teacher for Kauai Economic Opportunity. She is survived by two aunts: Fuyuko (Kazuki) Shimizu of Koloa and Hatsuko Sadamitsu of Lihu‘e ; and numerous cousins. Leonides Samiano died on March 28, 2005, in Los Angeles, Calif., after a long battle and complications from diabetes. His service will be held in Los Angeles. James Otho Sanders Age 90, of Kailua, passed away on June 18th at the Hale Ho Aloha Nursing home in Honolulu. He was retired from the Federal Aviation Administration after 40 years of government service. Mr. Sanders was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Gilland Sanders, and is survived by two sons, James Henderson Sanders of Scottsdale, Arizona and Thomas Michael sanders of Kailua; four grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. He will be buried with his wife in Monteagle, Tennessee, where they were married in 1938. Mr. Sanders was born in Tennessee in 1914. He served in the United States army as a Radio Operator from 1930 to 1937, and in 1938 he was appointed to the Department of Commerce Bureau of Air Commerce, later renamed the Civil Aeronautics Authority (CAA), as an Airways Keeper serving at facilities in Tennessee, Louisiana, and Texas. He later became an Air Traffic controller for the CAA in San Antonio, Texas from 1941 to 1947. From 1948 to 1950, Mr. Sanders and his family lived in post WWII Manila, Philippine Islands, where he served as Chief of the newly commissioned Manila Air Traffic Control Center and supervised the training of Filipino personnel to take over its operation. Mr. Sanders served as Chief of the Midway Island Air Traffic Control Center and Control Tower from 1950 to 1951 and was subsequently assigned to the CAA Regional Office in Hawaii as an Air Traffic Control Supervisor. His family who had returned to Texas after living in Manila, joined him in Honolulu. In 1958, the CAA was reorganized into the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA), and Mr. Sanders was assigned to its Honolulu Airspace Utilization Branch. In 1960, he was promoted to Branch Chief, a position he held until his retirement. Highlights of his career include temporary tours of duty for the State Department in Japan in 1956 for three months where he headed the development of the Japan Civil Aviation Assistance Group, and in Korea for one year in 1956-57 as a technical advisor for the United Nations Economic Coordinator and the the Republic of Korea's Minister of Transportation. In 1965, he represented the United States aviation interests at the meeting in Bangkok, Thailand. Mr. Sanders was a licensed pilot and a charter member of the Society of Airway Pioneers. Mr. Sanders earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from the University of Hawaii. After his retirement, he earned a real estate broker license and was active in real estate investment in Hawaii. He was a longtime member of the Elks (BPOE) and was a member of the Waikiki lodge. Most of his spare time was spent researching and documenting his Native-american Cherokee Indian ancestry, for which he received correspondence from others worldwide seeking information on their own ancestral history.
