Peterson Shines as All-Star

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Paul Peterson excelled in his last collegiate basketball game tonight in Springfield, Massachusetts. Playing for the West squad in the annual National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) East-West All-Star game, Peterson dished out a game-high ten assists and scored seven points in just 19 minutes of playing time as the East defeated the West 103-97.

Peterson Named All-Star

Laie, HI-Brigham Young University-Hawaii men’s basketball player Paul Peterson has been selected by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) to play in the annual NABC All-Star Game being held in conjunction with the NCAA II Elite Eight in Springfield, Massachusetts on Friday. BYU-Hawaii assistant coach Brandyn Akana will also participate as an assistant coach for the West team that Peterson will be playing for.

Alves Named All-Region Again

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Lucas Alves was honored today with a spot on the 2008 National Basketball Coaches Association All-Region Team for the West Region of NCAA II play. Alves also was named Daktronics All-Region and received All-Region All-Academic honors earlier this year.

Seasiders Get NCAA Bid

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team received an at-large bid to the NCAA II National Tournament today and will enter the West Regional in Anchorage, Alaska as the number seven seed. In an unusual twist of déjà vu, the Seasiders, 18-7 for the season and the second-place team in the Pacific West Conference, will face California Collegiate Athletic Association member Cal State-San Bernardino (22-7) in the tournament’s opening game on Friday. The Seasiders and Coyotes received identical seeds last season and met in an opening round game won by the Coyotes, who went on to the elite eight, by a 71-68 score.

Seasiders Move Up to Six

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team moved up to the sixth spot in the NCAA II West Regional Poll released today. The regional poll ultimately determines which teams will receive bids to the NCAA II tournament in March. The top eight teams in the final regional poll, which will be released as part of the NCAA II tournament show on Sunday March 9th, will receive tournament bids.

Alves Player of the Week Again

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Lucas Alves was named the Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week this week for the fourth time this season. Alves received the honor for his performance in two Seasider road wins over UH-Hilo last week in which he averaged 21.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as BYU-Hawaii completed the regular season with an 18-7 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the PacWest.

Seasiders Win, Await Tourney Bid

Hilo, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated UH-Hilo on the road for the second night in a row and will now wait another week to find out if they are selected for an NCAA II tournament berth. The Seasiders, currently ranked seventh in the West Regional Poll, rode the hot shooting of senior guard Paul Peterson to an 89-76 win over the Vulcans to improve to 18-7 overall and 13-5 in the Pacific West Conference and are hoping for an at-large bid to the post-season.

Seasiders Come Back to Beat Vulcans

Hilo, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team went on a 16-0 run early in the second half to turn a nine-point deficit into a seven-point lead and then scored the last nine points of the game after UH-Hilo came back to tie things up during an 83-74 road win over the Vulcans tonight in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, now 17-7 overall and 12-5 in the conference, trailed 40-31 just over two minutes into the second half, but junior Trenson Akana scored ten points and his teammates added six more over a two-minute stretch as the Seasiders surged into the lead. Paul Peterson the scored five of BYU–Hawaii’s last nine points as they shut out the Vulcans over the last three-and-a-half minutes of the game.

Seasiders Lose on Buzzer-beater

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team suffered a last-second, 67-65, defeat to conference champion Chaminade tonight on Marko Kolaric’s putback at the buzzer. The Seasiders and Silverswords hooked up in what was a tight battle throughout with nine lead changes and four ties leading up to the tense finale that gave Chaminade the conference title.

Seasiders Stop Rebels

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team opened the game with a 13-2 run and never trailed tonight as they defeated Dixie State College 85-68 in a Pacific West Conference game. The Seasiders, now 16-6 for the season and 11-4 in the PacWest, took a 49-30 lead at the half and pushed the lead to 28 points twice in the second half before coasting to the win.

Alves is Player of the Week

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Lucas Alves was named the Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week this week for the third time this season. Alves received the honor for his performance in three Seasider wins last week in which he averaged 21.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game as BYU-Hawaii won a conference game over Notre Dame de Namur and two over Grand Canyon.

Seasiders Outlast Antelopes

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated Grand Canyon tonight, 74-70, in a Pacific West Conference game. Seasider sophomore Lucas Alves scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the first half as the Seasiders raced out to a 17-point lead to open the game 23-6 only to see the Antelopes cut the lead to nine, 41-32, at the half and fight back to take a three-point lead, 57-54, midway through the second half. Consecutive jumpers by Paul Peterson and Alves got the lead back for BYU–Hawaii and the Seasiders held on for the win to improve to 15-6 for the season and 10-4 in the PacWest.

Sims' Hot Hand Sparks Win

Laie, HI—Junior Nate Sims came off the bench to score 28 points while shooting 11-12 from the field to spark the Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team to a 104-78 victory over Grand Canyon tonight in a Pacific West Conference game. Sims’ shooting percentage of .917 tied the second-best mark in BYU–Hawaii history and led the Seasiders to a 60.3 shooting percentage for the game as they improved to 14-6 for the season and 9-4 in the PacWest.

BYUH Drops NDNU

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated Notre Dame de Namur tonight, 90-65, in a Pacific West Conference game to improve to 13-6 for the season and 8-4 in the PacWest. Sophomore Lucas Alves scored 21 points in just 25 minutes of play to lead five Seasiders in double figures and spark the Seasiders to the win. BYU–Hawaii shot 56.5 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range to cruise to the victory.

Seasiders Blast HPU

Honolulu, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team raced past Hawaii Pacific tonight, 101-62, to give Head Coach Ken Wagner victory number 335 at BYU–Hawaii pushing him ahead of University of Hawaii coaches Vince Goo and Riley Wallace for the top spot in collegiate history in Hawaii. The Seasiders put the game away early, hitting eight of their first ten shots, including four three-pointers to take a 20-6 lead less than seven minutes into the game. BYU–Hawaii, now 12-6 for the season and 7-4 in the PacWest, kept up the hot shooting throughout the game, finishing at 61.4 percent from the field and 63.2 percent from beyond the arc.

Alves All-Academic

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Lucas Alves was honored today with a spot on the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team for District VIII, which comprises the Western United States. The district honor automatically puts Alves on the national ballot which will be voted on next week.

Comeback Falls Short

Honolulu, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team rallied from a 13-point deficit five minutes into the second half to tie the game at 66-66 with a minute-and-a-half to play, but fell short down the stretch in a 76-70 loss to Chaminade tonight in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, now 11-6 overall and 6-4 in the PacWest, battled back in a game that was tied seven times and saw 12 lead changes in the first half but couldn’t get the lead change they needed late in the game.

Wagner Milestone

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s men’s basketball win over UH-Hilo on Saturday did more than just solidify the Seasiders’ hold on second place in the Pacific West Conference. It produced a remarkable milestone for Head Coach Ken Wagner as well. The win gave Wagner 334 victories as coach of the Seasiders, tying him with former University of Hawaii legends Vince Goo and Riley Wallace for the most wins for a college head coach in state history.

Seasiders Fire Up Against Vulcans

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team gave up the first two points of the game to UH-Hilo but then scored the next ten to take complete control and raced to a 96-62 win over the Vulcans tonight in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, now 11-5 for the season and 6-3 in the conference, blistered the nets with 65.6 percent shooting en route to a 54-35 halftime lead and cooled off only slightly in the second half, shooting 53.3 percent after intermission to finish at 59.7 percent (37-62) for the game. BYU–Hawaii also controlled the boards throughout the game and finished with a 42-27 rebound margin.

Seasiders Stopped by Rebels

St. George, UT—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team dropped an 85-70 decision to Dixie State tonight in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, now 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the PacWest, fell behind by five points at the half, 40-35, cut the margin to one point twice in the second half, but ultimately fell victim to the Rebels 15 more points from the free throw line.

Seasiders Get Road Win

St. George, UT—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team claimed an important Pacific West Conference road win tonight, beating Dixie State 87-79 behind Trenson Akana’s 23 points. The Seasiders led 43-39 at the half, extended the lead to as much as 13 points with just under six minutes to play, and then held on at the end to improve to 10-4 for the season and 5-2 in the PacWest.

Alves Sparks Win

Laie, HI—Sophomore Lucas Alves scored eight of his game-high 19 points in a two-and-a-half minute span late in the second half to spark the Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team to a 74-53 win over Hawaii Pacific tonight in Pacific West Conference action. After the Sea Warriors had cut a 22-point BYU–Hawaii lead to single digits, 57-49, with just under five minutes to play in the game, Alves took over the game for the Seasiders and BYU–Hawaii, now 9-4 for the season and 4-2 in the conference, outscored Hawaii Pacific 17-4 to end the game.

BYUH Blasts HPU

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team raced out to a 14-point halftime lead and never looked back tonight as they defeated Hawaii Pacific 74-54 in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, now 8-4 for the season and 3-2 in the conference, broke open a close game in the first half with an 11-0 run over a four-and-a-half minute stretch beginning at the 12:07 mark of the period to take a 13-point lead and the Sea Warriors could not recover.

Silverswords Topple Seasiders

Laie, HI—Cold shooting in the second half doomed the Seasiders in their game tonight as Chaminade University was able to come back from a nine point halftime deficit to pull away with a victory. Besides shooting ony 30% in the second half, a large factor in tonight’s game was Chaminade’s ability to get to the charity stripe frequently where the Silverswords sunk 22 of their 30 free throw attempts in their come-from-behind 73-69 win over 23rd-ranked Seasiders.

Seasiders Drop in Poll

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team dropped from ninth to 23rd in the latest NCAA II national rankings today, falling 14 spots. The Seasiders, 7-3 for the season and 2-1 in the Pacific West Conference, received 28 points in today’s poll, a decrease of 97 points from the last vote on December 18th. All three of the Seasiders’ losses have come since the last poll.

Antelopes Outrun Seasiders

Phoenix, AZ—The 9th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team lost a tough road game to Grand Canyon tonight, 90-86, to fall to 2-1 in the conference and 7-3 overall. The Seasiders trailed by five at the half and traded the lead with the Antelopes several times in the second half before running out of time.

Men Win With Defense

Belmont, CA—The 9th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team won their second consecutive Pacific West Conference road game tonight by defeating Notre Dame de Namur 55-41. The Seasiders ran out to a 30-14 halftime lead behind strong defensive play that limited the Argonauts to just 22.2 percent shooting from the field and then spent the second half holding on to the lead to improve to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest.

Seasiders Victorious Over Argonauts

Belmont, CA—The 9th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team opened Pacific West Conference play tonight by claiming a 70-63 road win over Notre Dame de Namur. The Seasiders overcame a 12-point second-half deficit by utilizing a stifling, pressing defense that forced 14 turnovers after halftime and sparked an offense that suffered through a poor-shooting first half. The Seasiders improved to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference with the win.

Alves Gets Second Honor

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Lucas Alves was named the Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week today for the second time this season for his performance in three Seasider games last week. Alves averaged 27.3 points and 14 rebounds per game and shot 54.9 percent from the field as the Seasiders went 1-2 for the week.

Seasiders Lose at Buzzer

Laie, HI—Seattle Pacific’s Chris Banchero hit a jump shot from just inside the three-point line at the final buzzer to give 17th-ranked Seattle Pacific a come-from-behind 75-73 win over 9th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii tonight in men’s basketball action. Banchero’s dagger sent the Seasiders to their second loss of the season and dropped them to 5-2 for the year while Seattle Pacific improved to 6-1.

Peterson, Alves Honored

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Paul Peterson and Lucas Alves were both named to the Hoop ‘N Surf All-Tournament team today for their performances in two Seasider wins during the tournament. The Seasiders defeated Tampa 103-75 and Florida Southern 103-84 in their two tournament games.

Seasiders Swamp Moccasins

Laie, HI—The 9th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated Florida Southern tonight, 103-84, behind the inside-outside game of Lucas Alves and Paul Peterson. Alves scored 31 points and grabbed 17 rebounds while Peterson hit five three-pointers en route to 25 points and handed out eight assists and snatched four steals as the Seasiders improved to 5-1 for the season with the non-conference win as part of the Hoop ‘N Surf Tournament.

Seasiders Crack Top Ten

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team matched its highest-ever spot in the NCAA II national rankings today, moving up two spots to number nine in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll. The Seasiders, 4-1 for the season, received 125 points in today’s poll, an increase of 25 points over last week’s vote and the highest total ever received by BYU–Hawaii.

Peterson Named Player of the Week

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Paul Peterson was named the Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week today for his performance in a Seasider victory last week. Peterson scored a career-high 32 points while also coming within one point of his career best with eight assists as the Seasiders defeated Tampa 103-75 in their lone game of the week.

Seasiders Suffer Loss in Double Overtime

Laie, HI—The 11th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team battled Alaska-Anchorage for two overtimes tonight before falling to the Seawolves 95-90 tonight in a non-conference game for their first loss of the season. The Seasiders, now 4-1 for the year, and the Seawolves, now 5-3, both shot the ball extremely well in the back-and-forth contest that saw 16 ties and nine lead changes.

Peterson, Alves Lead Win

Laie, HI—Senior co-captain Paul Peterson hit seven of his eight three-pointers and scored 23 of his career-high 32 points in the first half to stake the 11th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team to a 22 point lead and the Seasiders went on to defeat Tampa tonight 103-75 in a non-conference game. Sophomore Lucas Alves soared for a career-high as well, knocking down 30 points to go with a game-high ten rebounds as the Seasiders improved to 4-0 for the season.

Movin' On Up

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team continued its climb up the national rankings today, moving up five spots to number 11 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll. The Seasiders, 3-0 for the season, received 100 points in today’s poll, an increase of 34 points over last week’s vote and the second highest total ever received by BYU–Hawaii.

Seasiders Run Away from Reddies

Laie, HI—The 16th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team opened the second half with a 14-0 spurt to run away from Henderson State tonight 96-62 in a non-conference game. The Seasiders, now 3-0 for the season, started slowly and led just 40-30 at the half. BYU–Hawaii picked up the defensive intensity to start the second half and held the Reddies without a point for over four-and-a-half minutes to open the half. The Seasiders led by as many as 40 points in the second period as they cruised to the win.

Seasiders Now 16th

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team moved up four spots in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll released today. The Seasiders, who won the Tarp It Tipoff Classic in Washington over the weekend in their first two games of the season, received 66 points in today’s poll, an increase of 17 points over last week to move to 16th place.

Alves Named Player of the Week

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Lucas Alves was named the Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week today for his performance in two Seasider wins last week. Alves averaged 24 points and 7 rebounds per game in leading BYU-Hawaii to a pair of tournament wins Western Oregon and tournament host Central Washington over the weekend.

Akana Leads Overtime Win

Ellensburg, WA—Junior Trenson Akana scored on a put-back with three seconds remaining in overtime to give the 20th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team a hard-fought 102-101 victory over host Central Washington in the championship game of the Tarp It Tip-off Classic tonight to improve to 2-0 for the season. Akana’s game-winner thwarted a second-half rally by the Wildcats that saw them come back from a 53-43 BYU–Hawaii halftime lead to send the game to overtime.

Seasiders Soar in Season Opener

Ellensburg, WA—The 20th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team soared past Western Oregon tonight, 107-77, in the first game of the Wildcat Classic basketball tournament in Ellensburg, Washington. The Seasiders built on a 54-33 halftime lead and finished their first game of the year with an impressive 30-point victory.

Seasiders Move Up in Poll

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team moved up five spots without making a single basket in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll released today. The Seasiders, who have yet to play a game this year and were picked as the pre-season favorite in the Pacific West Conference coaches’ poll, received 49 points in today’s poll, an increase of 19 points over the pre-season poll.

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team ran past the Honolulu Flyers tonight, 114-86, in an exhibition game at the Cannon Activities Center. The Seasiders raced to a 63-35 halftime lead and cruised to their third win of the exhibition season.

Seasiders Ranked 25th in Poll

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team will open the season as the 25th-ranked team in NCAA II play according to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II poll released recently. The Seasiders, who were picked as the pre-season favorite in the Pacific West Conference coaches’ poll, received 30 points in the poll to become one of ten teams that were not ranked in last year’s final poll to open the season in the top 25.

Seasiders Cruise

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team ran past Hawaii Select tonight, 110-72, in the final game of the American Money Group Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic. The Seasiders opened up a 55-34 halftime lead and continued to pull away in the second period for their second runaway win is as many nights in the exhibition tournament.

Seasiders Win Easily

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team opened their exhibition season today with a 129-52 pasting of a team from American Samoa as part of the American Money Group Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic. The Seasiders raced to a 66-11 halftime advantage and coasted to the easy win.
