Laie, HI—Cold shooting in the second half doomed the Seasiders in
their game tonight as Chaminade University was able to come back from a nine
point halftime deficit to pull away with a victory. Besides shooting only
30% in the second half, a large factor in tonight’s game was Chaminade’s
ability to get to the charity stripe frequently where the Silverswords sunk
22 of
their 30 free throw attempts in their come-from-behind 73-69 win over 23rd-ranked
Seasiders. BYU-Hawaii's inability to hold onto the
lead dropped their record to 7-4 on the season, 2-2 in league play, while
improving the Silverswords record to 9-4 on the year, and 4-0 in conference
play.
BYU–Hawaii led by as much as 16 points with seven minutes left in the
first half but Chaminade slowly chipped away at that lead until they gained
their first lead of the game in the second half with 11 minutes to play.
The Seasiders quickly re-took the lead on a strong lay-up by Lucas Alves
with 10:08 to go, and they would hold on to that advantage until there was
4:35 left in the game when Chaminade’s Stewart Kussler hit a jumper
to regain the lead for good.
Lucas Alves had another strong game for the Seasiders scoring 27 points while
making 12 of 23 shots from the field and pulling down a team high 7 rebounds
to lead the Seasiders. Sharp shooter Paul Peterson also had a good game shooting
6 of 12 on the night including 4 of 7 from behind the 3 point arc to finish
with 20 points for the match. Marques Whippy contributed with 12 points and
was the only other Seasider to score in double figures for BYU–Hawaii
tonight. BYU-Hawaii’s bench outscored Chaminade’s bench 20-5,
and scored an impressive 32 points off of turnovers, but their effort still
fell short in the end.

Paul Peterson shot 4 from 7 from behind the arc to
finish with 20
points on the night.
Rodrick Johnson led the Silverswords with 25 points, 10 of those coming
from the free throw line, and Mike Green finished the game with 24 points
on the
evening to help Chaminade to their 5th straight victory.
BYU–Hawaii looks to get back to their winning ways on January 16th
when they take on Hawaii Pacific in Laie. Game time is set for 7:30 pm HST.
