Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team raced out to a 14-point halftime lead and never looked back tonight as they defeated Hawaii Pacific 74-54 in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, now 8-4 for the season and 3-2 in the conference, broke open a close game in the first half with an 11-0 run over a four-and-a-half minute stretch beginning at the 12:07 mark of the period to take a 13-point lead and the Sea Warriors could not recover. Trenson Akana scored seven of his game-high 17 points during the run and Marques Whippy tallied the other four to spark the Seasiders. Paul Peterson scored 16 for BYU–Hawaii and Lucas Alves added 14 and 11 rebounds in the win. Jeremy Brown handed out four assists off the bench while Nate Sims came in for six points, six rebounds, and three assists in just 19 minutes of play. Jermaine Odjegba chipped in seven points, eight rebounds, and two blocks for the Seasiders. Jason Curtis was the only Sea Warrior to reach double figures, scoring ten points as Hawaii Pacific fell to 4-11 for the season and 1-5 in the PacWest. The Seasiders and Sea Warriors will play again on Saturday at 7:30 pm HST in Laie in another PacWest matchup. |
