Laie, HI—Sophomore Lucas Alves scored eight of his game-high 19 points in a two-and-a-half minute span late in the second half to spark the Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team to a 74-53 win over Hawaii Pacific tonight in Pacific West Conference action. After the Sea Warriors had cut a 22-point BYU–Hawaii lead to single digits, 57-49, with just under five minutes to play in the game, Alves took over the game for the Seasiders and BYU–Hawaii, now 9-4 for the season and 4-2 in the conference, outscored Hawaii Pacific 17-4 to end the game.

BYU–Hawaii took a 38-23 halftime lead by holding the Sea Warriors to just 25.9 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes and appeared headed to an easy win as they led 49-27 just over four minutes into the second half. However, the Sea Warriors fought back with a 19-2 run and a three-pointer by Ryan Walker cut the lead to five at 51-46 with 9:41 to play. A three-pointer by Alves moved the lead back to eight but a subsequent foul call against Alves sent him to the bench with 8:31 remaining with four fouls. The teams exchanged points until Alves re-entered the game with 4:58 to play and energized the Seasiders for the final run.

Seven of Alves’ rebounds came on the offensive glass and he also swatted away two of BYU–Hawaii’s six blocked shots in the game. Jermaine Odjegba hit 5-8 from the field and tallied 14 points for BYU–Hawaii and also got two blocks. Trenson Akana scored 11 points and made four steals and Paul Peterson finished with ten points and five assists for the Seasiders.
