Seasiders Victorious Over Argonauts

Nathan Sims (shown in earlier action) sparked the Seasider defense

Belmont, CA—The 9th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team opened Pacific West Conference play tonight by claiming a 70-63 road win over Notre Dame de Namur. The Seasiders overcame a 12-point second-half deficit by utilizing a stifling, pressing defense that forced 14 turnovers after halftime and sparked an offense that suffered through a poor-shooting first half. The Seasiders improved to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference with the win.

The Seasiders shot just 37.9 percent from the floor in the opening period and trailed 33-25 at the break. Notre Dame de Namur scored the first four points of the second half to go up 37-25 with 18:32 to play. The Seasiders, utilizing a full-court press that began producing turnovers and easy baskets, scored 12 straight points over the next three-and-a-half minutes to tie the score at 37-37. BYU–Hawaii finally took the lead, 43-41, with 12:43 to play on a pair of free throws by Lucas Alves and, although the Argonauts kept the score close and the game in doubt until less than a minute remained, the Seasiders stayed in front the rest of the way.

Alves scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the second half for the Seasiders and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Paul Peterson dropped in 16 points, including nine of ten from the free throw line, and added a team-high five assists. Jermaine Odjegba added 14 points and Marques Whippy and Nate Sims each contributed six points off the bench. Whippy added four rebounds and four steals as he joined with Sims and Jeremy Brown to provide a strong defensive spark off the bench. Brown finished with four assists in the win.

Chris Clock hit five three-pointers and scored 28 points to lead the Argonauts, now 4-5 for the season and 0-1 in the PacWest. Ryan Cooper got ten points and eight assists in the loss.

The same two teams will meet tomorrow night in Belmont, California at 7:30 pm PST in another PacWest contest.
