Seasiders Get Road Win

St. George, UT—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team claimed an important Pacific West Conference road win tonight, beating Dixie State 87-79 behind Trenson Akana’s 23 points. The Seasiders led 43-39 at the half, extended the lead to as much as 13 points with just under six minutes to play, and then held on at the end to improve to 10-4 for the season and 5-2 in the PacWest.

Both teams shot the ball well from the field in the game, with BYU–Hawaii hitting 27-48 from the field for 56.3 percent and Dixie State shooting 26-47 for 55.3 percent. Akana broke out of a shooting slump to hit 5-7 from the field, 4-6 from three-point range, and 9-10 from the free throw line. Corey Nielson added 13 points for the Seasiders and also handed out seven assists, made three steals, and grabbed four rebounds. Paul Peterson chipped in 12 points in the win. Lucas Alves was plagued by foul trouble throughout the game before fouling out in the closing minutes and finished with just eight points. Nate Sims also scored eight points and led the Seasiders with five rebounds off the bench. Jeremy Brown scored seven points, Marques Whippy tallied six, and Micah Casey added four as the BYU–Hawaii reserves outscored the Dixie bench 25-8 in the game and made a huge difference. Brown also dished out three assists while Casey pulled down four rebounds. The BYU–Hawaii backups shot 11-16 from the field and totaled 14 of the team’s 24 rebounds.

Kasey Winters scored 23 points, had 11 rebounds, and got three blocked shots to lead Dixie State, now 5-10 for the season and 2-4 in the PacWest. Ben Hartman had 15 points, Dan Stock 14, and Troy Randall ten for the Rebels.

The Seasiders face Dixie State again tomorrow night in St. George, Utah at 7:30 pm MST.
