Seasiders Defeat NDNU Again

Junior Ale dished out two assists and came down with two rebounds to go with his ten points in tonight's win

Laie, HI-The Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team raced to a 17-2 lead to open the game and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way as they defeated Notre Dame de Namur for the second night in a row, 85-65, tonight in Pacific West Conference play. The Seasiders used a balanced attack with four players scoring in double digits and four others with six or more points as they shot 56 percent from the field to improve to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest.

BYU-Hawaii displayed a strong defense in the opening period, holding the visiting Argonauts to just 29 percent shooting in the half as the Seasiders took a 40-23 lead into the locker room. Notre Dame de Namur responded by shooting 62 percent from the floor in the second half but the Seasiders countered by hitting 58 percent of their shots in the second stanza to keep the Argonauts from closing the gap significantly.

Paul Peterson led the Seasiders with 12 points and also handed out five assists in the win. Eric Boyce and Trenson Akana each dropped in 11 points and Junior Ale chipped in with ten. Danny Jackson netted nine, Wu Tai-hao and Corey Nielson eight apiece, and Lucas Alves finished with six points for BYU-Hawaii. Alves led the Seasiders to a 37-28 rebounding edge by grabbing eight caroms while Tai-hao and Nielson snared seven and six respectively. Nielson capped off his all-around game with a pair of steals and five assists.

Ryan Cooper provided the spark for Notre Dame de Namur with 25 points and five assists. Chris Clock scored 12 points and Chris Edwards came off the bench to tally nine points and grab six rebounds. Notre Dame de Namur is now 5-6 for the season and 0-2 in the conference.

BYU-Hawaii will take on Grand Canyon on Saturday in Laie at 2:30 pm HST.
