Antelopes Outrun Seasiders

Phoenix, AZ—The 9th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team lost a tough road game to Grand Canyon tonight, 90-86, to fall to 2-1 in the conference and 7-3 overall. The Seasiders trailed by five at the half and traded the lead with the Antelopes several times in the second half before running out of time.

BYU–Hawaii trailed by only two with eight seconds left and the Antelopes through an errant inbounds pass the Jeremy Brown pulled out of the air for the Seasiders. However, the ball was stripped away from him by the home team and a pair of free throws provided the final margin.

Lucas Alves scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead next game. Corey Nielson added 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds and eight assists for BYU–Hawaii. Paul Peterson and Jermaine Odjegba each tallied 12 points and Nate Sims netted ten off the bench.

Ladi Makinde led all scorers with 26 points for Grand Canyon. Ty Morrison scored 15, Rudy Bogan 14, and Brandon Dempster and David Gonzales 11 each in the win. Grand Canyon is now 3-0 in the conference and 8-2 overall.

The Seasiders will face Chaminade on Saturday at 7:30 pm HST in Laie in their conference home opener.
