Season | November 10, 2006 Seasiders Win in Asia-Pacific Opener
Laie, HI-The Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team kicked off the exhibition season with a runaway, 103-56 win over the New Caledonia National Team tonight in opening round of the BYU-Hawaii American Money Group Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic. The Seasiders broke away from an early 16-16 tie with a 17-3 run and never looked back as they shot 52.8 percent from the field and forced 23 turnovers. Sophomore Wu Tai-hao scored 19 points on 9-12 shooting to lead all scorers in the game. Freshman Lucas Alves energized the enthusiastic Seasider crowd with repeated dunks en route to 17 points and fellow freshman Okesene (Junior) Ale from Kahuku High School dazzled the hometown crowd with three of three from behind the arc and 13 points. Newcomer Jermaine Odjegba also scored in double figures with ten points as every Seasider in uniform scored in the game. Alves snared seven rebounds to lead all players in that category and sophomore Paul Peterson dished out five assists, had no turnovers, and made five steals from his point guard position. In an earlier game in the tournament, Hawaii Pacific defeated Civil Aviation University of China by a final of 82-52. Tomorrow night Chaminade will face New Caledonia at 6:00 pm and BYU-Hawaii will play Civil Aviation at 8:00 pm to conclude the tournament. |
