Seasiders Open Season with Win

Wu Tai-hao curls under the basket for a reverse layup in tonight's season-opening win

Laie, HI-The Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team opened the season with a 116-101 victory over Cal State-Stanislaus tonight. The Seasiders shot 58.6 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range in the game and out-rebounded the Warriors 45-37 to cruise to the win. BYU-Hawaii, 1-0 for the season, opened up a ten-point halftime lead and led by double figures the entire second half over the 0-1 visitors. After trailing 16-14 early in the first half the Seasiders used a 12-1 run to move to a 26-17 lead and the Warriors never got closer than six points the rest of the game.

Sophomore Wu Tai-hao scored 22 points on 6-8 shooting to lead the way for BYU-Hawaii. Tai-hao also grabbed ten rebounds, dished out seven assists, blocked five shots, and made three steals in just 26 minutes of play for the Seasiders. Junior Corey Nielson, starting his first game for BYU-Hawaii after transferring from Mt. Hood Community College, scored a point per minute getting 18 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 18 minutes of play. Sophomore Trenson Akana scored 17 points and went 3-4 from behind the arc and freshman Lucas Alves reached double figures with 11 points and also pulled down six rebounds for the Seasiders. Sophomore Jermaine Odjegba snatched seven rebounds to go with his nine points and Paul Peterson tallied nine points and five assists in the win. Twelve different players scored for BYU-Hawaii in the game.

Marcus Martinez led six Cal State-Stanislaus players in double figures with 19 points. Dominique Pennix and Rick Cardoso each scored 17, Cameron Quick tallied 16, Calvin Westbrook got 11, and Scott Behrs scored ten for the Warriors.

BYU-Hawaii will face Central Washington tomorrow night at 8:00 pm as part of the Seasider DII Tournament. Hawaii Pacific will face Cal State-Stanislaus in a 6:00 pm matchup in the tourney.
