Season | November 17, 2006 Seasiders Tame #12 Wildcats
Laie, HI-Senior Eric Boyce came off the bench to score 16 points, including four three-pointers, to lead Brigham Young University Hawaii to an 83-75 win over 12th-ranked Central Washington tonight in the second game of the BYU-Hawaii DII Tournament. Boyce hit a three-pointer just before the half to give the Seasiders, now 2-0 for the season, a 36-34 advantage going into the break and, after the Wildcats rallied from a 14-point second half deficit to take a 65-64 lead, scored four points in a 6-1 BYU-Hawaii run that put the Seasiders on top for good. Central Washington cut the lead to three points at 71-68 but freshman Lucas Alves spun inside for a short bank shot and made an ensuing free throw to put the Seasiders up by six. The Wildcats answered with a three-pointer but Boyce drilled his final three-pointer of the night to answer with three minutes to play and junior Corey Nielson took over from there, scoring the final six points for the Seasiders on free throws over the last minute and twenty seconds of the game. The visiting Wildcats, the pre-season favorite to win the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title, led by as many as seven points in the first half before the Seasiders rallied for the halftime lead. BYU-Hawaii opened the second half with a 10-0 run before Central Washington began battling back to tighten the game. Boyce grabbed three rebounds and handed out two assists to go with his 16 points for BYU-Hawaii. Sophomore Wu Tai-hao hit four of five shots from the field and all six of his free throws for 14 points and Nielson matched that total. Paul Peterson added ten points to go with his eight assists and Alves tallied nine. Tai-hao pulled down a game-high nine rebounds while Nielson came up with six steals. Senior Sa Tanuvasa picked up seven points off the bench for BYU-Hawaii as the Seasider reserves scored 33 points on the night. Lance Den Boer scored 25 points for the Wildcats to lead all players and got eight rebounds to lead Central Washington. Tyler Monk added 14 points and Bryan Freshwater got ten as the Wildcats opened their season with the loss. In an earlier game in the tournament, Hawaii Pacific rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to defeat Cal State-Stanislaus 79-75 in the Sea Warrior's opening game of the season. Cal State-Stanislaus fell to 0-2 with the loss. In tomorrow's tournament action Central Washington will face Cal State-Stanislaus at 4:00 pm and BYU-Hawaii will take on Oakland City at 8:00 pm. Sandwiched in between, at 6:00 pm, the BYU-Hawaii women's basketball team will open their inaugural season with a game against Oakland City. |
