Season | November 18, 2006 Seasiders Fell Mighty Oaks
Laie, HI-The Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team used an 18-0 run midway through the first half to turn a 20-13 deficit into a 31-20 lead and cruised to their third win in as many nights, 93-69, over Oakland City tonight. The Seasiders, 3-0 for the season, appeared sluggish as the visiting Mighty Oaks, in their opening game of the year, controlled the game and the scoreboard for the first ten minutes of the game but the Seasiders turned up their defensive intensity with five steals and two blocked shots during their decisive run and led comfortably the rest of the game. BYU-Hawaii took a 45-29 lead into the break and led by as many as 26 points midway through the second half. Last year's Hawaii State High School Player of the Year Okesene (Junior) Ale came off the bench to hit three three-pointers and score 19 points in just 17 minutes to lead all scorers in the game. Fellow freshman Lucas Alves turned in a double-double by dominating the paint to the tune of 18 points and ten rebounds in only 21 minutes of playing time. Corey Nielson scored ten points and swiped four steals for the Seasiders and Paul Peterson tallied nine points and handed out a game-high four assists. Sophomore Wu Tai-hao chipped in with nine points and five rebounds. All 14 of the Seasiders who played got into the scoring column. Andy Kissel scored 16 points to lead the Mighty Oaks. Keegan Carmony added 15 points and Kyle Attebury ten in the loss. In an earlier game, Cal State Stanislaus ran up a 27-point halftime lead and went on to defeat 12th-ranked Central Washington 112-96 to get their first win of the season against two losses. Central Washington fell to 0-2 for the season. BYU-Hawaii will take on Oakland City again on Monday at 8:00 pm following the Seasider women's game with Oakland City. |
