Seasiders Win Easily

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team opened their exhibition season today with a 129-52 pasting of a team from American Samoa as part of the American Money Group Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic. The Seasiders raced to a 66-11 halftime advantage and coasted to the easy win.

All ten BYU–Hawaii players that were suited up for the game played a near-equal amount of time in the game as Coach Ken Wagner used the game as an opportunity to look at his whole squad in action. Newcomer junior Nathan Sims came off the bench to score 27 points in 21 minutes while pulling down seven rebounds, handing out six assists, and making two steals to lead the Seasiders to the win. Sophomore Lucas Alves tossed in 20 points and came up with four steals and four rebounds. Senior guard Paul Peterson tallied 16 points, made five steals, passed out five assists, and nabbed four rebounds for the Seasiders. Corey Nielson, also a senior guard, led BYU–Hawaii with nine rebounds and seven steals to go with his four points and three assists and the Seasiders’ other starting guard, junior Trenson Akana, scored 15 points with three assists. Senior Micah Casey scored 14 points off the bench and grabbed eight rebounds and backup guard Ed Kim got 11 points and four assists. Junior forward Jermaine Odjegba knocked in ten points and sophomore guard Nick Holladay nailed three three-pointers for nine points and got four rebounds and three assists off the bench. Jeremy Brown rounded out the effort for BYU–Hawaii with three points and two assists.

Ata Perese scored 15 points and got ten rebounds to lead American Samoa. Junior Ale, who played for BYU–Hawaii last year but will be leaving in December to serve a two-year mission to Independence, Missouri for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, played for the American Samoa team and scored 12 points with seven rebounds.

BYU–Hawaii will face the Hawaii Select team tomorrow at 8:00 pm in the tournament’s finale.

Box Score

In an earlier game, the BYU-Hawaii alumni team defeated Hawaii Select 112-111. Kelii Naihe hit nine three-pointers and scored 30 points for the alumni. Alexus (Flex) Foyle scored 29, Sa Tanuvasa tallied 19, and Alan Akina and Brandyn Akana combined to hit 18 of 18 free throws as each score 12 points for the alumni.
