Seasiders Fall to Redhawks

Wu Tai-hao puts in two of his 20 points in tonight's game

Laie, HI-The Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball scored the first 11 points of the second half to erase most of a 12-point deficit but fell short in the end, losing to 16th-ranked Seattle tonight, 76-65. The 14th-ranked Seasiders, now 6-2 for the season, rallied to take a 62-61 lead with 4:27 to play but managed only a single field goal and a solo free throw the remainder of the game as the 6-1 Redhawks pulled away in the final minute.

Seattle blistered the nets in the first half to the tune of 59 percent from the field and took a 44-32 lead into intermission. But the Seasiders turned up the defensive pressure to start the second half and held Seattle scoreless for over five minutes while they pulled within one at 44-43. The Redhawks pulled ahead again by as many as seven points before BYU-Hawaii took the lead on a pair of free throws by Wu Tai-hao. After a Seattle three-pointer, Paul Peterson hit one of two free throws to pull the Seasiders back to within one point. The Redhawks got a jumper from Leigh Swanson to move back ahead by three but Tai-hao scored on a layup to make it 66-65 with 2:27 to play. Seattle scored the final ten points of the game, however, as the Seasiders misfired on their last six shots, all from three-point range. BYU-Hawaii shot just 35 percent from the field in the second half and 43 percent for the game. The Redhawks finished at 53 percent for the game.

Tai-hao led the Seasiders with 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists, two blocks, and two steals. Lucas Alves scored 14 points and grabbed five boards. Jermaine Odjegba and Eric Boyce each tallied eight points and Peterson ended with seven.

Sam Kirby led the Redhawks with 22 points. David White scored 15 and Ryan Coldren 10 in the win. Ryan Webb finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and four steals for Seattle.

BYU-Hawaii will face Harding University (AR) next, on December 19th at Kaiser High School at 6:00 pm HST.
