Peterson, Alves Lead Win

Laie, HI—Senior co-captain Paul Peterson hit seven of his eight three-pointers and scored 23 of his career-high 32 points in the first half to stake the 11th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team to a 22 point lead and the Seasiders went on to defeat Tampa tonight 103-75 in a non-conference game. Sophomore Lucas Alves soared for a career-high as well, knocking down 30 points to go with a game-high ten rebounds as the Seasiders improved to 4-0 for the season.

BYU–Hawaii opened the game with a 14-4 run and maintained a lead throughout the game, continually answering runs by the Spartans with runs of their own. Peterson hit 7-8 from long range in the opening half and the Seasiders were never seriously challenged after the intermission. Alves shot 12-19 from the field in the game and scored 18 of his points in the second half.

Jermaine Odjegba tossed in 18 points for the Seasiders and Trenson Akana reached double figures with 11 points. Peterson dished out a game-high eight assists to go with his scoring spree and came up with three steals and three rebounds. Freshman Marques Whippy saw his first action of the season for the Seasiders after recovering from an injury and contributed six points, four rebounds, and four assists in just 17 minutes of playing time. Jeremy Brown snared five rebounds off the bench in the win. BYU–Hawaii out-rebounded the Spartans 39-24 for the game and out-shot Tampa 59 percent to 47 percent. The Seasiders also shot 54 percent from three-point range. Peterson’s eight three-pointers ties for the second-highest total in BYU–Hawaii history with Antonio Valiengo. Shawn Opunui holds the record with nine.

Jeremy Black led Tampa, now 4-2, with 21 points and seven rebounds. Johnathan Ball had 18 points, Chris Evans 15, and Chris King 13 in the loss.

BYU–Hawaii’s next game will be on December 17th against Alaska-Anchorage in Laie. Tip-off will be at 7:30 pm HST.
