Seasiders Suffer First Loss in Double Overtime

Lucas Alves (shown in earlier action) scored 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in tonight's game

Laie, HI—The 11th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team battled Alaska-Anchorage for two overtimes tonight before falling to the Seawolves 95-90 tonight in a non-conference game for their first loss of the season. The Seasiders, now 4-1 for the year, and the Seawolves, now 5-3, both shot the ball extremely well in the back-and-forth contest that saw 16 ties and nine lead changes.

After Alaska-Anchorage shot 60 percent from the field to take a 38-36 halftime lead into the dressing room and didn’t cool off at all as they shot 64 percent in the second half. However, the Seasiders fought back with some hot shooting (57 percent) of their own and sophomore Lucas Alves nailed a three-pointer with 2.3 seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime tied at 76-76.

Neither team shot well in the overtime periods as the Seawolves fell to 36 percent and the Seasiders dropped to 33 percent. BYU–Hawaii took a four-point lead on a tip-in by Alves with 1:31 to play in the first overtime and appeared to be in control. However, Carl Arts scored on a jumper and subsequent free throw to cut the lead to 84-81 with 1:14 to play. Alves made one of two free throws with 59 seconds to play to put the Seasiders up by two. Alaska-Anchorage then misfired on three consecutive jump shots but each time came up with the offensive rebound. Arts put up a final attempt just as the buzzer sounded and found the net to tie the game and send it to the second overtime.

BYU–Hawaii took a four-point lead in the second overtime as well on a free throw by Alves with 2:11 to play but the Seawolves stormed back to take a one-point lead at 89-88 on a pair of free throws by Cameron Burney with 1:04 to go. Burney then stole an errant BYU–Hawaii pass and went the length of the court for a slam dunk and free throw to increase the lead to 92-88 with 38 seconds to play and the Seasiders could not come back again.

Despite the poor shooting in the extra periods, Alaska-Anchorage shot 56.9 percent for the game from the field and 55 percent (11-20) from three-point range. BYU–Hawaii shot 53.1 percent for the game and 60 percent (9-15) from behind the arc. However, the Seasiders missed 11 free throws in the game hitting on 29 of 40 chances.

Alves lead all scorers with 33 points. He also snared 11 rebounds and blocked a pair of shots. Paul Peterson hit 6-7 from long range to finish with 24 points and made three steals for the Seasiders. Corey Nielson and Trenson Akana each got ten points for BYU–Hawaii and Nielson dished out nine assists and came up with three steals.

Chris Bryant hit five three-pointers and led the Seawolves with 26 points. Arts got 22 points and 11 rebounds and Luke Cooper had nine assists.

BYU–Hawaii plays again tomorrow night in Laie against Florida Southern. Game time is at 7:30 pm HST.
