Seasiders Swamp Moccasins

Laie, HI—The 9th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated Florida Southern tonight, 103-84, behind the inside-outside game of Lucas Alves and Paul Peterson. Alves scored 31 points and grabbed 17 rebounds while Peterson hit five three-pointers en route to 25 points and handed out eight assists and snatched four steals as the Seasiders improved to 5-1 for the season with the non-conference win as part of the Hoop ‘N Surf Tournament.

BYU–Hawaii shot a sizzling 62.9 percent from the floor and 72.7 percent (8-11) from behind the arc in the first half to open up a 61-42 lead at the break. The Seasiders cooled off considerably in the second half, shooting just 30.8 percent to finish at 45.9 percent for the game, but maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second period to cruise to the win.

Nathan Sims came off the bench to drop in 12 points for BYU–Hawaii in just 13 minutes of action and Jermaine Odjegba tallied 11 points and snared ten rebounds as the Seasiders dominated the glass 52-29, including 22 offensive rebounds. Nick Holladay hit three consecutive three-pointers for BYU–Hawaii in the first half to finish with nine points and an assist in just six minutes of action and Corey Nielson totaled nine points and five assists in the win.

Andrei Grant scored 16 points off the bench and Brandon Jenkins, Rob Eldridge, and Rion Rayfield each scored 14 points to lead Florida Southern as the Moccasins fell to 7-4 for the season. Braxton Williams scored 12 points in the loss.

BYU–Hawaii plays again on Saturday night in Laie against 17th-ranked Seattle Pacific. Game time is at 7:30 pm HST.
