Season | December 22, 2007 Seasiders Lose at Buzzer
Laie, HI—Seattle Pacific’s Chris Banchero hit a jump shot from just inside the three-point line at the final buzzer to give 17th-ranked Seattle Pacific a come-from-behind 75-73 win over 9th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii tonight in men’s basketball action. Banchero’s dagger sent the Seasiders to their second loss of the season and dropped them to 5-2 for the year while Seattle Pacific improved to 6-1. BYU–Hawaii held an 11-point lead with just over eight-and-a-half minutes to play, but the visiting Falcons battled back behind senior guard Marques Echols, who scored 27 of his game-high 33 points in the second half. Echols put Seattle Pacific ahead 71-69 with his fifth three-pointer of the half, and sixth of the game, with 3:09 to play and Banchero scored on a layup to increase the lead to four with just over two minutes left. BYU–Hawaii battled back on two free throws by Trenson Akana and a steal and layup by Corey Nielson to knot the score at 73-73 with just under two minutes to play. After the Falcons ran the shot clock all the way down, Echols missed a three-pointer but the Seasiders couldn’t hold on to the rebound and lost the ball out of bounds. Echols then missed another jumper and the Falcons couldn’t hold on to the rebound and lost the ball out of bounds as well. Seattle Pacific then received a technical foul for arguing the out of bounds call to give the Seasiders an opportunity to take control of the game with under a minute to play. However, the Seasiders missed both technical free throws and then could not score on the ensuing possession giving the Falcons the ball with under 30 seconds to play. Because BYU–Hawaii only had four team fouls at the time, the Seasiders used a couple of fouls to prevent the Falcons from getting a shot off. With six seconds to play and the Seasiders with no more fouls to give, the Falcons inbounded the ball to Echols who found Banchero open on the left wing for the winning shot. Lucas Alves scored 18 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the Seasiders. Nathan Sims and Corey Nielson each tallied 11 while Akana, Paul Peterson and Jermaine Odjegba each scored ten for BYU–Hawaii. Nielson handed out nine assists for the Seasiders. Casey Reed was the only Falcon player other than Echols to reach double figures as he tallied 11 points. Banchero finished with eight for Seattle Pacific. BYU–Hawaii opens the Pacific West Conference season on January 2 at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, California. Game time is set for 7:30 pm PST.
