December 28, 2006 Seasiders Go Cold in Alaska
Anchorage, AK-The 19th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team got cooled off by a fire tonight as they fell to Alaska-Anchorage, 79-68, in the AT&T Alascom Jamboree. The Seasiders, who trailed midway through the first half, 24-18, had just rallied to within one at 28-27 when a fire alarm, evidently triggered by burning popcorn, forced the officials to interrupt the game and clear the building. The Seasiders had just hit six of their last nine shots and were shooting 52.4 percent from the game at the time of the stoppage. After a brief trip into the Alaska cold, the Seasiders' brought the chill back into the arena, hitting just 30.8 percent of their shots for the rest of the game as the host Seawolves increased the lead to 40-31 at the half and to as many as 19 points in the second half. BYU-Hawaii rallied near the end of the game behind a short burst of three-pointers to cut the lead to six at 74-68 with 1:42 to play but the Seawolves scored the rest of the game's points from the free throw line to improve to 8-2 on the season while dropping the Seasiders to 8-3. Alaska-Anchorage's only two losses this season have come against Division I teams during the Great Alaska Shootout. Freshman Lucas Alves scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the first half to lead the way for BYU-Hawaii. Eric Boyce hit three three-pointers for nine points and Paul Peterson also dropped in nine points and made three assists. Junior Ale and Jermaine Odjegba tallied eight points apiece for the Seasiders and Odjegba led the team with seven rebounds. Wu Tai-hao scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds but was limited by foul trouble to just 12 minutes played in the game. Corey Nielson led BYU-Hawaii in assists, with four, and made two steals to go with his two points. Carl Arts led the Seawolves with 20 points and nine rebounds. Joe Davis came off the bench to match Arts with 20 points and Luke Cooper handed out nine assists for the winners. Ivan Platenik also reached double figures in points, scoring ten for Alaska-Anchorage. BYU-Hawaii will play Alaska-Fairbanks in Anchorage tomorrow at 3:00 pm AST. |
