Season | December 29, 2006 Seasiders Fall to Nanooks
Anchorage, AK-The 19th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team fell victim to a hot-shooting Alaska-Fairbanks team tonight as the Nanooks overcame an eight-point second half deficit to defeat the Seasiders 76-71 at the AT&T Alascom Jamboree. The Seasiders, who led 38-35 at the half, scored the first five points of the second half and appeared to be taking control of the game, but the Nanooks used a 23-7 run that began at the 11-minute mark and ended with 2:18 to play that turned a 53-47 BYU-Hawaii lead into a 70-60 Alaska-Fairbanks lead. Alaska-Fairbanks improved to 9-5 with the win while the Seasiders dropped to 8-4 for the season. The Nanooks shot 58 percent from the field in the second half to finish at 55 percent for the game. The Seasiders shot a respectable 49 percent for the game, including 61.5 percent from three-point range, but couldn't overcome 24 turnovers and the second-half cold spell during the Nanooks' run. Freshman Lucas Alves once again led BYU-Hawaii in scoring, netting 24 points on 9-14 shooting. He also corralled seven rebounds to lead the team on the boards, blocked two shots, and grabbed two steals. Paul Peterson tallied 12 points and dished out a team-high six assists and Eric Boyce hit three three-pointers en route to 11 points for the Seasiders. Wu Tai-hao scored nine points before fouling out and Junior Ale and Jermaine Odjegba each chipped in six points for BYU-Hawaii. Jushay Rockett led the Nanooks with 33 points and nine rebounds. Kenny Barker scored 19 and Mike Titus 11 in the win. Barry Barnes, Jr. got nine assists and four steals for Alaska-Fairbanks. BYU-Hawaii will open the Pacific West Conference season on January 3rd with a game against Notre Dame de Namur at 7:30 pm in Laie. |
