Seasiders Run Away from Reddies

Laie, HI—The 16th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team opened the second half with a 14-0 spurt to run away from Henderson State tonight 96-62 in a non-conference game. The Seasiders, now 3-0 for the season, started slowly and led just 40-30 at the half. BYU–Hawaii picked up the defensive intensity to start the second half and held the Reddies without a point for over four-and-a-half minutes to open the half. The Seasiders led by as many as 40 points in the second period as they cruised to the win.

Sophomore Lucas Alves scored 22 of his 28 points in the first half to lead all scorers. Alves shot 13-17 from the field, mostly on powerful dunks although he also hit both three-pointers he attempted. He also led all players on the boards with nine rebounds to go with two blocks and two steals in just 23 minutes of play. In three games thus far this season, Alves has scored 76 points while playing just 70 minutes.

Trenson Akana hit three three-pointers and finished with 16 points for the Seasiders and Micah Casey tallied a career-high 12 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench. Paul Peterson matched Akana’s three long-range shots and scored ten points in the win. Corey Nielson handed out eight assists, snatched five rebounds, and came up with four steals while Jeremy Brown dished out six assists and snared four rebounds off the bench for the Seasiders.

BYU–Hawaii’s next game will be on December 15th against Tampa in Laie. Tip-off will be at 7:30 pm HST.
