BYUH Drops NDNU

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated Notre Dame de Namur tonight, 90-65, in a Pacific West Conference game to improve to 13-6 for the season and 8-4 in the PacWest. Sophomore Lucas Alves scored 21 points in just 25 minutes of play to lead five Seasiders in double figures and spark the Seasiders to the win. BYU–Hawaii shot 56.5 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range to cruise to the victory.

BYU–Hawaii trailed just once in the contest, at 2-0, and used a ten point run to open up a double-digit lead early in the first half at 19-8. The Seasiders led 40-28 at the half but the Argonauts closed to within six, 45-39, four minutes into the second period. However, Alves fueled a 20-4 run with 8 points, including two three-pointers, to give the Seasiders a 22-point lead, 65-43, at the 11:50 mark and BYU–Hawaii never let the Argonauts back into the game.

Alves hit 9-13 from the field and 2-3 from behind the arc. He also grabbed seven rebounds and handed out three assists in the win. Corey Nielson and Nathan Sims each scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds off the bench and Nielson also dished out five assists. Trenson Akana chipped in 11 points and Jeremy Brown went 3-3 from behind the arc en route to his ten points to go with four assists. Paul Peterson contributed a game-high seven assists and four steals. Marques Whippy came off the pine to lead the team in rebounds with eight and Micah Casey scored eight points. Peterson and Josh Brown each tallied five points in the game.

Chris Clock scored 19 points to lead Notre Dame de Namur, now 8-13 overall and 4-9 in the conference. Chris Edwards added 12 and Ryan Cooper 11. Dan Bergeron scored nine points and had ten rebounds for the Argonauts.

The Seasiders will face Grand Canyon on Friday in Laie at 7:30 pm HST.
