Season | February 15, 2008 Sims' Hot Hand Sparks Win
Laie, HI—Junior Nate Sims came off the bench to score 28 points while shooting 11-12 from the field to spark the Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team to a 104-78 victory over Grand Canyon tonight in a Pacific West Conference game. Sims’ shooting percentage of .917 tied the second-best mark in BYU–Hawaii history and led the Seasiders to a 60.3 shooting percentage for the game as they improved to 14-6 for the season and 9-4 in the PacWest. Sims scored eight of his 15 first-half points in the final three-and-a-half minutes of play to help turn a six-point BYU–Hawaii lead into a 59-47 halftime margin. Grand Canyon cut the lead to nine points early in the second half but the Seasiders quickly extended the lead back to double digits and were never seriously threatened the rest of the game. Sophomore Lucas Alves scored 18 points on 8-11 shooting for the Seasiders and also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Trenson Akana added 14 points for BYU–Hawaii and Paul Peterson dropped in nine while handing out a game-high seven assists. Corey Nielson added eight points, six assists, and six rebounds off the bench and Jeremy Brown notched eight points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Jermaine Odjegba shot a perfect 4-4 from the field to score nine points in the win. Sims shooting performance matched former Seasider Scott Salisbury, who also shot 11-12 from the field back in December of 2001. The all-time record for field goal percentage with ten or more shots attempted is Roger Rowberry’s perfect 14-14 performance against Simon Fraser back in January of 1979. Sims is now shooting a sparkling .714 (70-98) from the field for the season which would put him in second place in NCAA II competition if he had made enough shots (minimum of five per game) to qualify for statistical leadership. David Gonzales scored 22 points to lead Grand Canyon, now 11-13 overall and 6-10 in the PacWest. Brad Kanis scored 16 points and had eight rebounds and three blocked shots off the bench for the Antelopes.
