Seasiders Outlast Antelopes

Lucas Alves (shown in earlier action) scored 20 points in the first half of tonight's game

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated Grand Canyon tonight, 74-70, in a Pacific West Conference game. Seasider sophomore Lucas Alves scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the first half as the Seasiders raced out to a 17-point lead to open the game 23-6 only to see the Antelopes cut the lead to nine, 41-32, at the half and fight back to take a three-point lead, 57-54, midway through the second half. Consecutive jumpers by Paul Peterson and Alves got the lead back for BYU–Hawaii and the Seasiders held on for the win to improve to 15-6 for the season and 10-4 in the PacWest.

After regaining the lead, the Seasiders went up by as many as seven points and led by six with just 1:14 to play following a fast break lay-up by Nate Sims. But Grand Canyon cut the lead to one point with 30 seconds to play. Peterson hit two free throws with 25 seconds left to increase the margin to 73-70 and, after a pair of missed three-pointers by the visitors sandwiched around a Seasider turnover, Marques Whippy finally sealed the win by making the second of two free throws with just four seconds remaining.

Alves grabbed eight rebounds to go with his 25 points and handed out three assists in the win. Peterson finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, and four assists while Corey Nielson and Sims each added ten points and two steals for the Seasiders. Nielson also added six assists. Jermaine Odjegba tallied eight points for BYU–Hawaii.

David Gonzales and Rudy Bogan each had 16 points to lead Grand Canyon, now 11-14 overall and 6-11 in the PacWest. Ty Morrison added 15 points and Brad Kanis 12 in the loss.

The Seasiders will face Dixie State on Wednesday in Laie at 7:30 pm HST.
