Seasiders Drop Hilo Again

Wu Tai-hao scored his second double-double of the season and set a new career high in rebounds in tonight's win over UH-Hilo

Laie, HI-Just as they did last night, the Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat UH-Hilo tonight, 93-83, in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, now 16-5 for the season and 8-1 in the PacWest, trailed by seven, at 16-9, after the first five minutes of the game. But for the second night in a row the Seasiders used a first-half run to take control of the game. Trailing 20-15 at the 11:20 mark of the half, the Seasiders outscored the Vulcans 17-5 over the next six minutes to take a lead they would never relinquish. Sophomore Jermaine Odjegba started the Seasiders on the run, scoring the first six points of the run and senior Eric Boyce scored the next nine points for the Seasiders with three three-pointers before Odjegba followed up with another deuce to give BYU-Hawaii a 32-25 advantage.

The Seasiders took just a 38-34 lead into the locker room but opened the second half with a 16-6 run capped by two more Boyce treys for a 54-40 lead. BYU-Hawaii extended the lead to as many as 19 points in the final period before a late Vulcan rally cut the deficit to just eight points near the three-minute mark. However, the Seasiders drained nine of ten free throws down the stretch to hold off the visitors. Just as it did last night, the BYU-Hawaii depth proved to be a big difference as the Seasider bench outscored the Vulcan bench 24-8.

Boyce finished with seven three-pointers, the second time this season he has hit that mark in a game, and totaled 25 points to lead all scorers. The seven threes in one game ties the third-best mark in BYU-Hawaii history. Sophomore Wu Tai-hao soared to a double-double for the Seasiders with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Odjegba knocked down 14 points and grabbed four rebounds while Lucas Alves and Paul Peterson matched Tai-hao with 12 points each. Peterson also dished out a game-high six assists. Corey Nielson came off the bench for seven points, four rebounds, and four assists in just 16 minutes of play.

Rashad Bilal led the Vulcans with 22 points and Travis Sobers scored 21 in the loss. Samuel Wilhoite added 14 points and Vince Alverado 11 as UH-Hilo fell to 8-13 for the season and 5-4 in the PacWest.

BYU-Hawaii will play against Chaminade on Saturday night at 7:30 pm in Laie.
