Season | February 2, 2008 Seasiders Fire Up Against Vulcans
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team gave up the first two points of the game to UH-Hilo but then scored the next ten to take complete control and raced to a 96-62 win over the Vulcans tonight in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, now 11-5 for the season and 6-3 in the conference, blistered the nets with 65.6 percent shooting en route to a 54-35 halftime lead and cooled off only slightly in the second half, shooting 53.3 percent after intermission to finish at 59.7 percent (37-62) for the game. BYU–Hawaii also controlled the boards throughout the game and finished with a 42-27 rebound margin. Paul Peterson hit 9-11 from the field, 4-6 from behind the arc, and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line to lead all scorers with 28 points. He also dished out five assists to match Corey Nielson and Jermaine Odjegba for team honors. Lucas Alves dropped in 14 points on 7-9 shooting and grabbed six rebounds for the Seasiders while Trenson Akana and Marques Whippy finished with 11 and ten points respectively. Whippy added five rebounds and three assists and Akana handed out four assists in the win. Nielson led the Seasiders with seven rebounds and also made three steals while Odjegba and Nate Sims each pulled down six caroms. Sims chipped in seven points off the bench and Jeremy Brown came in for eight points and five steals. Vince Alvarado scored 16 points to lead UH-Hilo, now 9-8 overall and 5-5 in the PacWest. Rashad Bilal had 11 points in the loss. The Seasiders held the Vulcans to just 34.5 percent from the field and UH-Hilo’s leading scorer, Jay De Maestri, to just three points. The Seasiders will travel to Honolulu next to face conference-leader Chaminade on Wednesday at 7:30 pm HST. |
