Season | February 21, 2007 BYUH Wins in Hilo
Hilo, HI-The Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team got an important road win tonight with a 76-62 victory over UH-Hilo in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, now 19-7 for the season and 11-3 in the conference, are ranked eighth in the NCAA II West Region poll and needed tonight's win to continue their battle for an NCAA II playoff berth. The top eight teams in the final regional poll will make the NCAA II tournament. The Seasiders took the lead at 5-2 early in the first half on a Wu Tai-hao three-pointer and never trailed in the game. A 15-3 run opened up a 22-9 lead for BYU-Hawaii and the Seasiders took a 38-25 lead into halftime. The Vulcans fought back in the second half to cut the lead to just four points at 48-44, but the Seasiders responded with eight straight points to get the lead back to double-digits and maintained the double figure lead the rest of the game. Tai-hao hit 5-8 from the field to lead BYU-Hawaii with 17 points and three blocked shots. He also pulled down five rebounds as the Seasiders out-rebounded the Vulcans 35-27 and out-shot the home team 58.3 percent to 41.4 percent from the field. Trenson Akana came off the bench to drop in 5-6 from the field and from the line to total 16 points and Junior Ale, also off the bench, tossed in 13 points for the Seasiders on 5-6 shooting. The BYU-Hawaii reserves out-scored the Seasider starters tonight 39-37. Lucas Alves finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for the Seasiders and Jermaine Odjegba pulled down six boards to go with his four points. Paul Peterson, Akana, and Corey Nielson each handed out three assists on the night. Samuel Wilhoite scored 19 points and got 12 rebounds to lead four Vulcans in double figures. Rashad Bilal scored 13, Vince Alvarado 12, and Darryl Harris ten as the Vulcans fell to 9-17 overall and 6-8 in the PacWest Conference. BYU-Hawaii will finish out the regular season with a home game against Hawaii Pacific on March 2nd at 7:30 pm HST. |
