Season | February 29, 2008 Seasiders Come Back to Beat Vulcans
Hilo, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team went on a 16-0 run early in the second half to turn a nine-point deficit into a seven-point lead and then scored the last nine points of the game after UH-Hilo came back to tie things up during an 83-74 road win over the Vulcans tonight in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, now 17-7 overall and 12-5 in the conference, trailed 40-31 just over two minutes into the second half, but junior Trenson Akana scored ten points and his teammates added six more over a two-minute stretch as the Seasiders surged into the lead. Paul Peterson the scored five of BYU–Hawaii’s last nine points as they shut out the Vulcans over the last three-and-a-half minutes of the game. BYU–Hawaii trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half before cutting the margin to seven, 36-29, at the half. After the Vulcans went up 40-31 to start the second half, the Seasiders took advantage of a hot shooting streak, four Vulcan turnovers, and a technical foul to turn the momentum their way. BYU–Hawaii hit five of six shots during the run and four of four free throws to take a 47-40 lead. The Seasiders increased the lead to as many as ten points on three occasions but UH-Hilo battled back and tied the game at 73-73 at the 4:31 mark. After each team made one of two free throws, the Seasiders held the Vulcans scoreless and pulled away for the win. Sophomore Lucas Alves scored 27 points for the Seasiders and also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds in the win. Akana finished with 19 points, including three three-pointers and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Peterson ended the night with 13 points that also included three from long range and was also perfect from the line, hitting four of four. Corey Nielson handed out nine assists for the Seasiders and Jeremy Brown came off the bench for nine points and seven rebounds. Vince Alvarado scored 15 points to lead UH-Hilo, now 13-12 overall and 8-9 in the PacWest. Rashad Bilal and Samuel Wilhoite each added ten points for the Vulcans and Wilhoite had seven rebounds. BYU–Hawaii will face UH-Hilo again tomorrow in Hilo at 7:30 pm HST to close out the regular season. |
