Seasiders Blast HPU

Honolulu, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team raced past Hawaii Pacific tonight, 101-62, to give Head Coach Ken Wagner victory number 335 at BYU–Hawaii pushing him ahead of University of Hawaii coaches Vince Goo and Riley Wallace for the top spot in collegiate history in Hawaii. The Seasiders put the game away early, hitting eight of their first ten shots, including four three-pointers to take a 20-6 lead less than seven minutes into the game. BYU–Hawaii, now 12-6 for the season and 7-4 in the PacWest, kept up the hot shooting throughout the game, finishing at 61.4 percent from the field and 63.2 percent from beyond the arc.

The Seasiders led 56-28 at halftime and the Sea Warriors were never able to mount a threat in the second half as BYU–Hawaii continued to pull away after intermission. Hawaii Pacific, now 5-16 overall and 2-10 in the PacWest, shot just 39.6 percent for the game and BYU–Hawaii out-rebounded the Sea Warriors 35-23 on the night.

Trenson Akana hit a career-high six three-pointers to finish with 25 points to lead BYU–Hawaii. He shot 7-9 from the field, 6-7 from long range, and 5-5 from the free throw line. Paul Peterson hit four three-pointers of his own and finished with 18 points, four assists, and three steals in the win. Nathan Sims came off the bench to tally 18 points on a perfect 6-6 shooting from the field and Lucas Alves shot 6-8 and finished with 17 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Marques Whippy also reached double figures off the bench, scoring ten points while grabbing six rebounds. Jeremy Brown, who started in place of Corey Nielson, added seven points and four assists to the victory.

Logan Wolf scored 13 points and Miodrag Radojevic 11, both players coming off the bench, to lead Hawaii Pacific. They each had five rebounds to lead the team on the glass as well.

The Seasiders will face Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday in Laie at 7:30 pm HST.
