Seasiders Win, Await Tourney Bid

Paul Peterson (shown in earlier action) hit six three-pointers in tonight's win over UH-Hilo

Hilo, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated UH-Hilo on the road for the second night in a row and will now wait another week to find out if they are selected for an NCAA II tournament berth. The Seasiders, currently ranked seventh in the West Regional Poll, rode the hot shooting of senior guard Paul Peterson to an 89-76 win over the Vulcans to improve to 18-7 overall and 13-5 in the Pacific West Conference and are hoping for an at-large bid to the post-season.

Peterson hit 7-9 from the field, including 6-7 from three-point range, to score 23 points to lead all scorers in his last regular-season game as a Seasider. He also dished out four assists in the win. Lucas Alves scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Jermaine Odjegba tallied 13 points and blocked a pair of shots for the Seasiders as they scored the first six points of the game and led the rest of the way. Trenson Akana added nine points for BYU–Hawaii while Jeremy Brown and Marques Whippy each chipped in seven off the bench.

Rashad Bilal scored 16 points to lead UH-Hilo, who finish at 13-13 overall and 8-10 in the PacWest. Samuel Wilhoite added 15 points for the Vulcans and Jay De Maestri had ten rebounds.

BYU–Hawaii’s post-season fate will be determined on March 9th when the NCAA will announce the brackets and pairings for the DII tournament. With two wins this week and with the eighth, ninth, and tenth ranked teams in the regional poll each losing once over the weekend, it would appear that the Seasiders have a good shot at being included in the eight-team field for the West Regional.
