Season | March 9, 2007 Seasiders End Season with Close Loss
Arcata, CA—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team put up a battle today against 8th-ranked Cal State-San Bernardino but ultimately fell victim to 31 turnovers and lost 71-68 in the first round of the NCAA II West Regional Tournament. The Seasiders, who end the season with a 20-8 record, held a six-point lead with just under five minutes to play but were outscored 14-5 down the stretch. Senior Eric Boyce scored 11 of his team-high 18 points as BYU-Hawaii took a 33-31 halftime lead. The teams battled back-and-forth throughout the game with eight ties and 18 lead changes in the contest. BYU-Hawaii appeared to take control late in the game by turning a 55-54 deficit into a 63-57 lead, the largest lead by either team in the game. However, Cal State-San Bernardino came back to take the lead at 69-67 with just under two minutes to play and the Seasiders missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity before hitting one of two free throws to cut the deficit to one with 38 seconds to play. After the Coyotes missed on a pair of free throws, the Seasiders had a chance to take the lead but committed another turnover and then had to foul. Cal State-San Bernardino then made a pair of free throws and BYU-Hawaii had one last chance to tie the score but could not get a good look at the basket and Boyce’s desperation three-pointer was well off the mark. Boyce hit four three-pointers to fuel his 18 points and was joined in double figures by Lucas Alves with 13 points and Trenson Akana with 11. Alves led both teams in rebounds with seven and Wu Tai-hao pulled down five to go with nine points. Corey Nielson tallied six points and has seven assists and five steals. Paul Peterson chipped in seven points and five assists for the Seasiders. Prentice Harris scored 18 points to lead Cal State-San Bernardino and Ivan
Johnson added 16 in the win. |
