Seasiders Move Up in Poll

Lucas Alves and the Seasiders moved up without playing

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team moved up five spots without making a single basket in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll released today. The Seasiders, who have yet to play a game this year and were picked as the pre-season favorite in the Pacific West Conference coaches’ poll, received 49 points in today’s poll, an increase of 19 points over the pre-season poll.

BYU–Hawaii finished with a 20-8 record last season and earned a berth in the NCAA II National Tournament where they lost a close game in the first round. The Seasiders return three starters from last year’s squad, including All-PacWest First Team selection Lucas Alves and senior guards Paul Peterson and Corey Nielson. The Seasiders open the regular season against Western Oregon on Friday in Ellensburg, Washington as part of the Central Washington Tournament. Western Oregon helped the Seasiders move up in the rankings by defeating Montevallo, the number 18 team in the preseason poll helping to drop them from the rankings. Several other ranked teams lost to allow the Seasiders to move up but six previously unranked teams jumped ahead of BYU–Hawaii by winning early-season games.
