Smith Sets New Record

Fresno, CA- BYU-Hawaii freshman Chelsea Smith set a new school record for the 6K as she finished fourth at the NCAA II West Regional cross country meet today. Smith, a walk-on to the team this year, cut 11 seconds off the school record with her time of 22:13 and qualified for the NCAA II National Championships to be held in two weeks in Ashland, Ohio.

As a team, the Seasider women finished in 13th place in the 20-team field with a team score of 338. Namea Curtis was the second Seasider to finish, claiming 64th place in 24:23. She was followed by Melissa Flake (77th, 24:58), Sabrina St. Laurent (91st, 25:44), Kaylene Wilson (102nd, 26:25), and Anne Hopkins (107th, 26:47).

The BYU-Hawaii men's team finished 14th in a 16-team field with a team score of 434. The Seasiders were led by Steve Soelberg, who finished the 10K course in 35:52 for 66th place. He was followed by Pelikani Aho (88th, 37:55), Thomas Jordan (91st, 38:13), Billy Cornelison (94th, 38:26), Steven LoForti (95th, 38:50), Scott Carter (99th, 39:29), and Heber Moulton (104th, 40:42).

Smith now owns two of the top three times for the 6K in Seasider history. Earlier this year she turned in what was at the time the second best time in school history at 22:40. Melody Sheppard's 22:24 in 1999 now drops to second on the all-time list.
