Seasiders Drop First Games
Laie, HI-The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's softball team opened
the season with a pair of losses today, 10-0 and 3-2, in a doubleheader
with Augustana. In the second game, Augustana's Bethany Almquist dumped
a shallow fly just out of reach of a diving Juanita Vega to drive in the
winning run in the top of the seventh inning.
The Seasiders scored the first run of the second game on Marie Maese's
RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. Augustana knocked in two
runs in the fourth but BYUH answered back when Vega scored Heather Murray
from first base on a deep single. Murray scored both of the Seasiders'
runs. In the top of the sixth with Augustana threatening to score, BYUH
centerfielder Maggie Reynolds gunned an Augustana player at the plate
to keep the game tied at 2. However, the Seasiders didn't respond at the
plate.
In the first game the Seasiders' defense walked five batters, committed
four errors and hit three batters allowing Augustana to score 10 runs
on just five hits. Augustana pitcher Tammy Nielson struck out 12 batters
and only allowed two hits.
The Seasiders' record is 0-2 while Augustana moves up to 3-1. The two
teams will meet again on Thursday with games at 1:00 and 3:00 pm HST.
