Seasiders' Rally Falls Short

Leslie Fester (shown in last year's action) drove in a run in today's seventh-inning rally

Carson, CA—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women's softball team rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a leadoff homerun by Kahealani Alohikea-Betham, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Seasiders dropped the first game of a doubleheader to Cal State-Dominguez Hills today, 7-4. The Toros won the second game 8-0 in five innings behind the one-hit pitching of Kaci Carroll.

Alohikea-Betham, a freshman from Ewa Beach who prepped at Kamehameha, hit her second home run of the young season to get the Seasiders started in the seventh. After Katresha Veazie walked Margaret Gnadt reached on an error that advanced pinch-runner Jessico Soli to second base. April Jorgensen then singled to load the bases and another Toro error allowed Kerissa Clifford to reach base while Soli scored. Melissa Lehano and Leslie Fester followed with consecutive RBI groundouts that plated Gnadt and Jorgensen with the final two runs of the game before the rally fell short.

Jorgensen’s double in the fifth inning proved to be the lone hit for the Seasiders off Carroll in the second game that was shortened by the eight-run rule. Jorgensen, Lehano, and Betham each collected two hits on the day for the Seasiders in the twin bill.

The Seasiders will face Vanguard tomorrow in a non-conference doubleheader in Costa Mesa, California at 1:30 pm PST.
