Seasiders Get First Win

Katresha Veazie delivers a pitch during her complete game win today

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team rode the strong pitching of junior Katresha Veazie to their first win of the season today as the Seasiders defeated Chaminade 5-3 in the second game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader today after the Silverswords took a 5-3 decision in the first game. The Seasiders scored four runs in the third inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit and Veazie made the lead stand up for the victory.

Veazie scattered ten hits and struck out two in posting the win and also drove in what proved to be the winning run during the third inning rally. After the Silverswords had scored a single run in both the second and third innings, freshman Athena Salinas led off the BYU–Hawaii half of the third with a single down the right field line. Melissa Lehano followed with a single through the right side and Leslie Fester bunted for a base hit to load the bases. Freshman Bettye Doering then smacked a bases-clearing triple to right to give the Seasiders their first lead of the day. One out later, Veazie scored Doering with a sacrifice fly to center. After Chaminade cut the lead to one with a solo run in the fourth inning, Veazie helped provide some insurance by smacking a leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth. Ella Arume pinch ran for Veazie and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Kerissa Clifford to complete the scoring for the game.

Chaminade scored four unearned runs following a BYU–Hawaii error in the sixth inning of the first game to break open a 1-1 tie and then held on for the win. Doering, who went the distance on the mound for the Seasiders in the first game, led off the second inning with a double and scored on a Chaminade error to tie the game at 1-1. After Chaminade scored their runs in the sixth, the Seasiders came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning when Kerissa Clifford tripled down the right field line after Brooke Perriton was hit by a pitch. Lehano then drove in Clifford with a fielder’s choice but the rally fell short.

Doering led the Seasiders at the plate in the twinbill with four hits, two runs, and three RBI’s. Clifford, Lehano, and Fester each finished the day with two hits and Clifford got two RBI’s on the day.

BYU–Hawaii will face Chaminade again tomorrow in a conference doubleheader in Laie beginning at 12:00 noon HST.
