Seasiders Split

Katresha Veazie (shown in earlier action) picked up her second win of the year today in the first game

Waipio, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team scored a season-high 11 runs today as they defeated Chaminade 11-4 in the first game of a mixed, non-conference doubleheader today at Central Oahu Regional Park. The Seasiders slammed out ten hits, including a grand slam home run by Kim Artiaga and a two-run shot by Bettye Doering, to cruise to the win. The Seasiders lost to Hawaii Pacific 13-0 in the second game of the day.

BYU–Hawaii trailed the Silverswords 2-0 before breaking out with a six-run third inning capped by Artiaga’s slam over the left-field fence, her first homer of the season. After Chaminade closed the gap to 6-4, Doering powered a one-out blast in the sixth that drove home Leslie Fester, who had walked to lead off the inning, to boost the lead back to four. The Seasiders tacked on three more runs in the seventh on a pair of bases-loaded walks and an RBI single by Brooke Perriton. Fester, Perriton, and Artiaga each collected two of the Seasiders’ ten hits in the game and Fester scored three times in the win. Katresha Veazie went the distance on the mound for the Seasiders to claim the win.

Fester collected her third hit of the day in game two for the only hit for the Seasiders in the five-inning, run-rule shortened game against Hawaii Pacific. BYU–Hawaii now stands at 3-14 for the season.

BYU–Hawaii will face Grand Canyon on both Monday and Tuesday in Laie beginning at 1:00 pm HST in a pair of conference doubleheaders.
