March 21, 2008 Seasiders Split Pair
Belmont, CA—The Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team split a Pacific West Conference doubleheader on the road today, winning the first game against Notre Dame de Namur 8-7 before dropping the second game 8-4. The Seasiders overcame a two-run deficit to win the opener but couldn’t come back from an early six-run deficit in the second game. In game one, the Seasiders trailed 2-0 after three innings but closed the margin to one with in the fourth when Bettye Doering led off with her second home run of the season. The Seasiders took the lead in the top of the fifth with a six-run outburst highlighted by back-to-back two-run doubles by Kahealani Alohikea-Betham and Kim Artiaga. BYU–Hawaii added a single run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Crystal De La Cruz to take an 8-3 lead and then had to hold off a furious Argonaut rally in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win. Doering got the win on the mound but was relieved with no outs in the seventh after the first three Notre Dame de Namur hitters all reached base. De La Cruz came on to get the final three outs but gave up a pair of hits to make it close. The Seasiders scored twice in the top of the first to take a brief lead in game two on Artiaga’s two-run single. The Argonauts tallied four times in the first, once in the second, and three more times in the third before the Seasiders were able to put a stop to the scoring. BYU–Hawaii got an unearned run in the fifth and scored again in the sixth on an RBI single by Melissa Lehano. Lehano, De La Cruz, and Artiaga each had four hits in the twinbill for the Seasiders. Artiaga drove home four runs in the two games and Lehano scored three times. BYU–Hawaii now stands at 6-21 for the season and 3-7 in the PacWest while Notre Dame de Namur improved to 14-15 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The same two teams will meet tomorrow in another
conference doubleheader.
